    'Heroes' action figures coming soon

Action figures of five main "Heroes" characters—Peter Petrelli (above left), Hiro Nakamura, Claire Bennet, as well as Sylar (below left) and Mohinder Suresh—will be in stores soon.

NBC is going to heroic efforts to keep “Heroes” in viewers minds through the summer and into the fall TV season.

The latest offering is a series of action figures of some of the sci fi show’s characters. The first of three planned sets of figures will be available in June.

The seven-inch figures were created by Mezco Toyz. For more information, go to Mezco's Web site.

NBC also teamed with trading card company Topps to create “Heroes” trading cards. Ninety cards are featured in the first set, which focuses on characters and scenes from the show’s first season. All the cards include autographs from cast members.

Additional features include special flip cards that depict “before” and “after” looks as the characters morph into their heroes; memorabilia cards that contain a swatch of actual “Heroes” costume material; one-of-a-kind original sketch cards from “Heroes” illustrators, including Tim Sale; and select episodic imagery from the show.

The initial card set is available now, while another set will come out in July. For more, go to Topps.

And don’t forget the new “Heroes” Webisodes that begin in July at NBC.com. The site has a ton of offerings to get you a “Heroes” fix before the show finally returns Sept. 22.

NBC will turn over its entire prime time schedule to “Heroes” on Sept. 22, showing an hour-long catch-up show at 7 p.m. followed by the two-hour Season 3 premiere at 8 p.m.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for more “Heroes.”

'Heroes,' 'Office' Webisodes coming this summer

    Posted at 1 a.m. Wednesday, May 14

NBC announced it’s fall TV schedule a few weeks ago, but it’s till vying for headlines this week as the other networks announce their fall schedules.

On Monday NBC confirmed that Jimmy Fallon will replace Conan O'Brien as host of "Late Night" sometime next year.

NBC Digital Entertainment will gives fans of “The Office” and “Heroes” something to watch this summer. In July, new Webisodes of those shows will begin on nbc.com.

Here's what the network said about the Webisodes:

In the second series of "The Office" Webisodes, Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) pursues a unique solution in an effort to pay back his looming gambling debts. This installment also stars Oscar Nunez, Leslie David Baker and Craig Robinson.

In the first installment of the "Heroes" Webisodes, titled "Manhunt," users will uncover a new villain along with their motive. The fast-paced, twist-filled Web series sets fans on a path that leads to the explosive premiere of the third season of “Heroes.”

'Heroes' soundtrack packed with strong new tunes, old faves

Artist Steven Parke created "Heroes"-style paintings of the soundtrack's musicians. Above are his renderings of Wendy & Lisa, Nada Surf and Imogen Heap. For more images, go to nbc.com.

NBC dropped the first “Heroes” soundtrack on Tuesday, with new releases by Chicago band Wilco, Panic at the Disco and Imogen Heap—three of my favorites on the disc.

The album is packed with strong tunes from several indie bands and old favorites. One of the greatest songs ever, David Bowie’s “Heroes,” closes the album. The reunited Jesus and Mary Chain contributes its first studio recording in 10 years.

And fans of the show will recognize three mostly instrumental songs from Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, the series’ composers. People of a certain age should remember Wendy & Lisa from their days as part of Prince and the Revolution.

“Heroes” executive producer Allan Arkush created video montages for five of the songs. I’ve included the four videos released so far. You can download them all from Zune.

I also included a montage video to Bowie's "Heroes" I found at YouTube. Enjoy them all.

    Chiller brings back scary 'Profit'

    Posted at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29

I’ve got some good news for DirectTV subscribers.

Mia_pasdar Chiller TV, showing on DirectTV channel 257, is bringing back “Profit,” the excellent mid-90s TV series that starred Adrian Pasdar of “Heroes.” Pasdar played businessman Jim Profit, a sinister climber who will do anything—including kill—to get ahead.

The series and Pasdar were excellent, but it must have been ahead of its time. It didn’t last very long on TV. But Chiller promises some never-aired episodes.

The 2-hour premiere first airs at 7 p.m. Feb. 7, but there are multiple showing. Click here for the schedule.

It’s just one of many “events” planned by Chiller for February that also include:

  • A “Tales from the Darkside” marathon on Feb. 2;
  • A Valentine’s Day film fest focusing on the dark side of love;
  • The before-they-were stars horror films of Tom Hanks (Feb. 22, “ He Knows You're Alone”) and George Clooney (Feb. 23, “Return to Horror High”).

If you’re a horror genre buff, you’ll love Chiller TV. It shows old movies and TV series, including “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “Friday the 13th: The Series” (and the movies), “Children of the Corn,” “Carrie,” “Twin Peaks” and many other horror, monster and supernatural offerings.

Check the Chiller Web site for more details. in Crime show, Drama, Heroes, Science fiction/Fantasy, Television  |  View this letter only | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)

Can't keep a good 'Heroes' down

    Posted at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.

MnablogNot even the Hollywood writers’ strike can kill off NBC’s “Heroes.”

Recent news reports have said that because of the ongoing writers’ strike, “Heroes” creator Tim Kring retooled Monday’s episode to serve as the Season 2 finale instead of the normal midseason finale.

That’s not the case, David Gardner, a senior press manager at NBC told me. Gardner said Kring did make some changes to the episode, but not to turn it into a season finale.

“Tim Kring wants everyone to know that he has every intention of coming back,” in the new year, Gardner told me Friday.

As for whether two heroes will die in the episode, as the teasers say, Gardner would only say they are in “mortal peril.”

He declined to name names. But guessing is fun, isn’t it? In Monday’s episode, called “Powerless,” Peter is duped by Adam into a showdown with Nathan, Hiro and Parkman at Primatech Paper. Also, Micah asks his mom, Niki, to help him rescue Monica from the street gang. Maya decides Sylar’s a bad guy. Too bad she didn’t see clearly before Sylar killed her brother, Alejandro, last week.

In other NBC news from Friday, the network announced its new midseason lineup of reality shows.

“American Gladiators” will begin at 8 p.m. Jan. 6, according to an NBC release, and then move to its regular day/timeslot at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7. Don’t worry all you “Chuck” fans, your nerdy hero will be back (strike permitting). The network recently picked up the show for the full season.

A new season of “The Biggest Loser” will premiere at 7 p.m. New Year’s Day, while “1 vs. 100” returns beginning at 7 p.m. Jan. 4.

Donald Trump will be back beginning at 8 p.m. Jan.3 with the premiere of “The Celebrity Apprentice.”

    More reality TV. I can’t wait—NOT. in Drama, Heroes, Science fiction/Fantasy  |  View this letter only | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)

'Heroes' hits, but is it too late?

    Posted at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12

"Heroes" showed how good it could be in Monday night's episode called "Four Months Ago."

Too bad the Hollywood writers' strike might cut the season short by several months.

That's right. "Heroes" creator Tim Kring told "Entertainment Weekly" that the Dec. 3 episode has been reworked and could become the Season 2 finale if the strike continues.

It's too bad because in the "EW" interview Kring copped to the fact that he and the writers miscalculated this season. He told the magazine that he's listened to complaints and is responding to them.

During much of the first season, "Heroes" was super-charged with exciting adventures, strange mysteries and wild cliffhangers. Despite the large cast of heroes, almost every new plot twist pushed the characters together and viewers were rewarded with payoffs nearly every week.

Although I haven't hated this season, it has moved much more slowly. The newer characters haven't all fit--Monica, Maya and Alejandro in particular. And only recently has a plot point--the virus--been introduced that, like last season's nuclear apocalypse, brings many of the heroes together for a common cause.

Kring and his writers seemed to be righting the ship with last week's and Monday's episodes. I loved seeing Noah Bennet go to the dark side. Matt Parkman's battle with his father, and his realization that he can kick some butt, has been fun to watch. Last week's revelation that Adam is in the present (as opposed to the failed feudal Japan storyline with Hiro) and possibly the guy who's been killing the older heroes was a cliffhanger worthy of Season 1.

In Monday's episode we saw more of Adam (played by the always interesting "Alias" vet David Anders), who was locked up with Peter four months ago after Peter exploded. We also got more backstory on the weirdly wonderful electric gal Elle (Kristin Bell), who appears to hold a torch for our handsome Peter (who we got to see more of as well).

The beauty of the episode was that it answered several questions (how D.L. died, what brought Niki to the Company, how Peter lost his memory), but it left us with new mysteries to solve. Is the Haitian working with Bennet and against the Company, or vice versa? Is Adam a good guy or a bad guy? Is Bob a good or bad guy? Will the heroes come together to figure out how to stop the virus?

It looks like "Heroes" has three episodes to give us those answers before the show goes on winter break, or the second season ends.

Let's hope that strike is resolved sooner rather than later so we can get more exciting "Heroes."

    More twists in 'Heroes' tale

    Posted at 11:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15

The mystery of the older "Heroes" keeps getting more convoluted.

On Monday, Nathan Petrelli found a group photo of the older generation of heroes that included his parents, Kaito Nakamura, Linderman, Charles Deveaux and that Company guy Bob, who recently hired Mohinder Suresh. Three more women and three more men are pictured (I didn't recognize any of them).

One of the those men, according to Matt Parkman, is his father. And when Parkman tries to get Molly to find his dad with her powers, she freaks out because he's the man who has been haunting her dreams.

That revelation may have overshadowed an even bigger one (at least if my theory holds true). I think Papa Petrelli, whose face is blurred in the photo because he is turned toward his wife, might be Noah Bennet, a.k.a. Horn-Rimmed Glasses. They guy was wearing horn-rimmed glasses and had very similar hair!

If you saved the episode, take another look. I paused, played, replayed, paused. The ages don't seem to match, but maybe that's one of his powers: staying a certain age.

By the way, at least three of the people pictured in that group photo are now dead. Four, if you believe Papa Petrelli is dead.

    Parkman_2

We didn't see Peter or Hiro in this episode, but other characters are starting to come together. Nathan and Parkman are now working together. Claire and West are getting closer. Micah and his cousin, Monica, who seems to be able to pick up skills by just seeing them done one time.

Now Sylar has hooked up with Maya and Alejandro on their way to New York, and he already has seen their powers.

The episode ended with another great cliff hanger. But the teaser for next week's episode revealed the best news: Kristen Bell of "Veronica Mars" makes her "Heroes" debut.

    They're heroes, not lovers

    Posted at 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8

    Heroes2_4

"Heroes" should be fighters, not lovers. That's my conclusion after the "Titanic"-like cheesiness of Monday night's scenes between Claire and West (above).

If you remember last week's episode, West spied Claire as she cut off her toe and grew another one. In Monday's episode, she tries to explain it away by saying she was giving herself a pedicure.

"You're not very good at it," he cracks.

After teasing Claire in class and making her cry, West tells her he just wants her to admit she's different.

"OK, I'm a freak," she says, then launches into a big speech about hating to have to hide who she really is.

Now, are you ready for the cheese?

"Claire, shut up," West says as he picks her up and flies off with her. They both start laughing and all is swell. Later, they make out on a beach. (Watch the hands dude!)

Can we just get back to the butt-kicking? Maybe I'm a cynical old fart without a romantic bone in my body, but this all had me laughing. I could hear Celine Dion singing in my head.

The West/Claire beach scene was saved when Claire spied the mark on his neck that, last season, heroes found on their necks after Claire's dad kidnapped them. West told Claire a story about a guy with horn-rimmed glasses who took him.

    Yep, it was Noah Bennet.

    BIG REVEAL? (spoiler alert!)

Noah Bennet gets a shock when he sees the eighth of the eight paintings done by Isaac of the older heroes.

"We all know how it begins with the death of Kaito Nakamura," he tells Mohinder Suresh, "but how does it end?"

Mohinder sends him the image of the painting, which shows Bennet dead on the ground, and someone kissing Claire in the background.

Does that mean Bennet has some kind of power too? in Heroes, Television  |  View this letter only | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)

    Awww, don't do that Claire

    Posted at 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1

Spoilers alert: Only read if you've seen this week's "Heroes."

OK, did Claire Bennet have to cut her toe off on Monday night's "Heroes"? I'm just now recovering from the wooziness.

Claire's fascinated by her power and is testing her limits, but aside from grossing me out Monday she was found out by her classmate West. He flew off when he spied her cutting off the toe (yes, he's a hero too).

West will come back around after the shock (I will) and convince Claire to leave her parents and somehow use her powers for good.

Monday's episode caught us up with Peter Petrelli, who can't remember anything about his past, including his powers or his name. He's being held captive by a group of Irish thieves.

Peter surprises himself every time he uses one of his powers. He zapped a guy with an electric pulse, used Claire's ability to heal, D.L.'s ability to pass through his restraints, and Niki's super strength to kick some butt.

Now he's got to deal with the leader of the Irish group, who has a box that holds Peter's identity. He won't give Peter the info unless he helps the gang.

My guess is the gang somehow is working for the Company.

Peter was wearing the helix symbol necklace again. It means "great ability." Ando called it the Godsend symbol, and explained that it was on the crest of the samurai Takezo Kensei, who turns out to have regeneration powers of his own. Hiro, still back in feudal Japan, is helping the samurai become the great man he is supposed to be. Let's hope that story wraps up soon. I'd like to see Hiro back in the present.

Suresh could use his help. The Company, thinking Suresh is working for them, sent him to heal the memory-erasing Haitian, who had contracted a virus that killed Suresh's sister and is now killing the heroes. Only Suresh's blood can cure anyone afflicted with it. According to interviews with creator Tim Kring, the virus will be one of this season's big themes.

After being healed, the Haitian erased Suresh's memory and took off for California and his old partner Noah Bennet. They are searching for the paintings done by Isaac Mendez that tell what is going to happen to the older heroes. One of the paintings that Bennet already has foretold Kaito Nakamura's death. Bennet says it was one of eight paintings in the series.

Which brings us to Angela Petrelli, who was attacked by someone after Parkman interviewed her at the police station concerning Kaito's death. Whoever the attacker was, no one could see him. Remember last week I said that maybe Claude, the invisible guy who wore the hoodie, was the killer? What do you think?

    WATCH FOR IT

Sylar showed up in the preview for next week's episode, sitting on a beach with a woman. He also didn't seem to remember how he got there.
