THE SIMPSONS: TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XIX
    7 p.m. Sunday, Fox

I think “The Simpsons’” writers got a little lazy while working on this 19th edition of “Treehouse of Horror.” It’s fun, but not as witty as past installments.

In “Untitled Robot Parody,” Lisa’s Malibu Stacy convertible morphs into a robot, “Transformers”-style, creating an army of bots to fight opposing gadgets. In the Charlie Brown-inspired “It’s the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse,” Milhouse watches in horror as the Grand Pumpkin chows down on every human in sight. Finally, in “How to Get Ahead in Dead-Vertising,” Homer is recruited by a group of ad men to kill celebrities so that their likenesses can be used in commercials. The dead celebs—George Clooney, Prince and Krusty the Clown among them—come back to Earth to stop Homer.

The nostalgia factor makes “Grand Pumpkin” the best of these amusing bits for me, but they all lack that trademark “Simpsons” brand of satirical smartness.

Thankfully, the frightfest opens big—as in, Homer not being able to squeeze into a voting booth. He has to use the “double-wide” booth instead, but his problems don’t end there: When he votes for Barack Obama, the machine counts his click as “One vote for McCain.” Homer clicks again and again, and the machine responds “Two votes for McCain,” “Three votes for McCain.”

Your vote not being counted correctly? Now that is frightening.

Tune in or out? out of 4.
