'Seeker' packs a punch, but could use 'Xena'-style punchlines

"Legend of the Seeker" stars among TV's sexy new talent.
LEGEND OF THE SEEKER
4 p.m. Saturday, WGN
The scoop: Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the creators of “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” return to syndicated TV after a long absence with this fantasy epic based on the book series by author Terry Goodkind. In it, a young man named Richard Cypher (Craig Horner) learns that he is the “Seeker,” a hero who will battle the ruthless tyrant Darken Rahl (Craig Parker), who wants to unleash an ancient evil to enslave the world. Helping Richard are his protector Kahlan Amnell (Bridget Regan) and the wizard Zedd (Bruce Spence).
What works: The first half of the two-hour premiere drags a bit as it sets up Richard’s tale, but later, when he’s given his Seeker sword and starts slicing and dicing, you’ll be cheering for our hero. Remember the slow-motion fighting done to driving rock music in “300”? That’s what you get here, too, and Horner has the abs to rival any Spartan’s in “300.”
What doesn’t: “Seeker” is not as cheesy as “Xena” and “Hercules,” and that’s too bad. The actors’ rise to the dramatic challenges, but I’d still like to see them deliver some witty “Xena” retorts. And although the swordplay and sorcery is great fun, I’d rather see less “Lord of the Rings” seriousness and more winky, smart-alecky wackiness a la “Xena” and “Hercules.”
Tune in or out?

out of 4. Like I said, the swordplay and sorcery are a riot.
BONUS: Lucy Lawless—Xena herself—introduces “Legend of the Seeker” in a 10-minute preview here. Lawless just happens to be “Seeker” producer Rob Tapert’s wife.

X:WP/HTLJ isn't as cheesy as people make it seem. OK OK, sure it had its campy moments, but it had a lot of story lines and high quality episodes people ought to acknowledge that were on par too.
It was cool to see Lucy Lawless hot the Making of segment. How befitting :)
Curt's reply: Hey Angela, cheesy is GOOD in this case. I loved the cheesiness of those shows. Thanks for commenting.

I'm a big fan of the books - there have been some changes to the story, but that's to be expected given the 1 hour syndicated TV format. Avid readers - don't let the changes dissuade you, there's a great story to be told here, don't let your biases prevent your from a new telling of a great story. To new viewers - I think you're gonna love it. The first two episodes show a lot of potential, and I can't wait to see what happens next. A nice blend of characters and action, and the second episode really does pick things up!
Curt's reply: Thanks for your comments Matt. Enjoy the show.
