'Earl' creator pokes fun at Baldwin battle

“My Name Is Earl” star Jason Lee is making light of the war of words between his boss, Greg Garcia, and “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin.

“What really happened is I’m friends with Alec Baldwin,” Lee told reporters during a conference call Friday. “I told him to say that stuff unbeknownst to Greg so that Greg would retaliate and so that we could get some press for the show.”

Garcia, laughing, played along with Lee.

“Going into Season 4, whatever we can do to get some press [for ‘Earl’], I’m all for it,” he joked.

The dust-up started when Baldwin said that NBC paid more attention to “Earl” than “30 Rock.” Garcia retaliated by calling Baldwin a “psychotic narcissist.” Here’s how the rest of it played out, according to reports:

Baldwin: “Why are you Scientologists always rendering these medical opinions you aren’t qualified to give?”

Garcia: “Alec, I can't tell you how happy I am to once again point out that you are an idiot. I'm unable to answer your question about Scientologists because, although I respect anyone's right to their own beliefs, I am not currently nor have I ever been a Scientologist. Maybe you should have done some research.”

During Friday's call, Garcia said he had to defend his show.

“Yeah, when you create and run a show you have a family here. We all work very hard to do what we do,” Garcia said. “As the head of the family, I would never take the first punch but if you get hit, you come out swinging.”

Garcia lightened up when asked if Baldwin would be appearing as a guest star on “Earl” this season.

“No, but maybe. That’d be great. If we could get the press out of it, come on in,” he said. “Either him or Kim Basinger, one of the two we should have on the show soon.”
