'Reality Bites Back' a fun spoof, but 'Gong Show' gets gonged
Posted at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16
Dave Attell is a funny guy. Too bad he's stuck hosting Comedy Central's "The Gong Show with Dave Attell."
Attell's humor relies on meanness; he's best when he lets the venom spray. He's just not funny as a nice guy, and that's what he has to be as host of this hack-ish relaunch of the 1970s talent/freak show. It premieres at 9 p.m. Thursday.
If it wasn't for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, one of several rotating judges, the debut would be as gong-able as most of the talentless contestants who embarrass themselves for the title belt and a measly $600. (One guy kicks himself in the face, and one woman ... well, her nickname is a play on Queen Latifah and that's all I am allowed to print.)
So skip Attell (right) and his "Gong Show," but come back to Comedy Central at 9:30 p.m. for "Reality Bites Back," in which the delightfully sadistic Michael Ian Black (below) puts 10 comics through their paces in twisted versions of reality shows.
You'll think the comics are in on the joke-until they endure their first competition in the spoof, "Extreme Manipulation: Home Edition." One by one, they walk into a dark room where thy must use their best romantic (read: X-rated) lines to seduce a mystery guest. When the lights come on, they learn they've been talking dirty to a parent or grandparent.
One comic actually leaves the show after the test. I guess a $50,000 prize wasn't enough to convince him to stay.
The comedians vying for the title are Kyle Cease, Chris Fairbanks, Jeff Garcia, Red Grant, Tiffany Haddish, Bert Kreischer, Mo Mandel, Donnell Rawlings, Amy Schumer and Theo Von.
In upcoming episodes, you'll be treated to "Almost-American Gladiators," "Hunting With the Stars," "So You Think You Can Dive," "The Amazing Disgrace," "Shock of Love,” "The Biggest Chubby” and what look like in the preview “American Surv-Idol-er’s Kitchen.”
"Reality Bites Back" is one hilarious spoof of reality competition shows, but "The Gong Show" wouldn't even make it as a contestant on "America's Got Talent."
WHO'S THAT GUY?
One of the comics on "Reality Bites Back" introduces himself as Theo Von, but he's not fooling me. Look closely, "Road Rules" fans: It's Theo Vonkurnatowski (left) from the 2000 season of MTV's "Road Rules."
