'Doctor Who' family's great new addition: 'Sarah Jane Adventures'

Sarah Jane and Maria battle aliens in "The Sarah Jane Adventures."
Meet Captain Jack Harkness’ auntie, Sarah Jane Smith.
Both alien-busting characters originated on the much-adored British sci fi series “Doctor Who,” which was revived in 2003 by British TV writer Russell T. Davies, the man who created “Queer As Folk.”
The sexy Capt. Jack stars in Davies’ randy, adult and often stunning “Torchwood,” which airs at 8 p.m. Saturdays on BBC America. It’s currently wrapping up its excellent second season.
Davies is expanding the “Who” family again with a new, more family-friendly spin-off, “The Sarah Jane Adventures,” which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Friday on the Sci Fi network.
Don’t let the phrase “family-friendly” scare you. Although “Sarah Jane” is touted as a children's show, I like it too—and not because I'm immature.
Sarah Jane Smith, played by the wonderful Elisabeth Sladen, first appeared on “Doctor Who” in the 1970s as one of his human time/space-traveling companions. Davies brought her back for an appearance on his more recent version of the show.
Apparently the character and the actress made an impression. Sladen injects Sarah Jane with the compassion, confidence and courage that make you believe this woman-of-a-certain-age can do battle with alien evil on earth.
Sarah Jane is also independent, at first shrugging off her new neighbor, Maria Jackson (Yasmin Paige), when the girl stumbles upon Sarah Jane’s secret work.
But Sarah Jane is forced to team with the ‘tween when Maria learns that the manufacturers of Bubble Shock, a hot new drink that’s getting all of England hooked, are aliens bent on conquering Earth.
Just as the other members of the “Who” family do, “Sarah Jane” moves at a thrilling clip. And yes, lessons are taught—this being a kids’ show and all. But they are cleverly inserted.
The premiere challenges its audience to question what it’s told by advertising. Bubble Shock is touted as being good for you.
“It’s organic!” the ads say. “Organic what?” is Sarah Jane’s response. Obviously, it’s something that’s not good for you.
“The Sarah Jane Adventures” is a grand new addition to the “Doctor Who” universe.
