About this blog
Livin' the green life isn't easy--especially when you're like me, Supriya Doshi, living in the city without a lot of money, space or time. But that doesn't mean it's impossible. Practically Green chronicles my adventures, trials and tribulations as I try to lead an eco-friendly existence in Chicago. And, hopefully you'll pick up a few tips and tricks along the way, too, that will green up your life without cramping your style.

Goodbye, outdoor Green City Market

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 -- 8:32 p.m.

Today was the last day for the outdoor Green City Farmers Market. So despite the fact that it's moving indoors starting this Saturday (Nov. 1), I used the "last one" as an excuse to go and pick up some goodies.

Sadly, I only had $8 in my pocket, $4 of which I had to bum. So I had to make it stretch. I was hoping that the end of the season meant fewer things to pick from, thus making it easier to spend less. But I was wrong.

There was still plenty to be had besides the fall bounty of squash, potatoes and apples. I spotted peppers, corn on the cob, a few tomatoes and plenty of greens--in addition to baked goods, cheese and Blue Marble milk.

I ended up walking away with just three things: Fingerling potatoes (I made this with them--delicious), 4 corn and 5 or 6 baby beets--and $3 still in my pocket.

I would have bought more, but I made a trip to Stanley's earlier this week to stock up. (I love spending $12 and walking out with a bagful of produce.) And, as much as I wanted to buy more squash, I still have a few of them left from past CSAs and a trip I made out to an apple orchard.

But I'll definitely be back throughout the rest of the fall/winter to see what kind of local produce makes it through our cold, cold seasons.

Find more info on where and when to find the market this winter here.

I'm always amazed at how much I buy at farmer's markets versus how much I actually end up eating. Somehow I end up getting over ambitious when I have all of that food in front of me and then I can't eat all of it before it goes bad once I'm back home.

SUPRIYA'S REPLY: I know exactly how you feel! It all looks so delicious, and I have all these ideas. Then I realize I'm one person trying to eat all this. I do try to freeze whatever I can't eat though. It's always exciting to find frozen farmers market treasures in the freezer in December!
