About this blog
Livin' the green life isn't easy--especially when you're like me, Supriya Doshi, living in the city without a lot of money, space or time. But that doesn't mean it's impossible. Practically Green chronicles my adventures, trials and tribulations as I try to lead an eco-friendly existence in Chicago. And, hopefully you'll pick up a few tips and tricks along the way, too, that will green up your life without cramping your style.

Eco-burnout

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 -- 8:49 p.m.

Confession: Sometimes I get sick of being green.

It sounds horrible, but it's true. It comes in waves, mostly because I'm fed up, worn out, lazy or just bored. This week, "worn out" is the winner.

My eco-burnout usually creeps up gradually, with me occasionally buying delicious bottled beverages that I normally avoid, leaving lights or fans on when I'm not at home, and going straight for the chemically laced Draino without even trying a greener method.

I'm training to run the Chicago Marathon in October, and eating, sleeping, working and running takes up so much of my energy that sometimes I feel like it's all I can manage right now.

My burnout struck me this afternoon, as I returned to work with one of those delicious drinks, among other things, and an evil plastic bag in hand. I felt guilty and annoyed with myself for my lack of effort.

Luckily, my eco-slumps always end with a high note. I remembered all the small changes my friends and family are making to support the environment. Nothing dramatic, just little things that fit their lifestyles but still make a big difference.

What better inspiration could I ask for?

(But, man, those chemicals in Draino work well ... )
