About this blog
Growing up three doors apart in the sleepy suburbs of Chicago, Matt Lynch and Ryan Pedersen could agree on many things. Baseball was not one of them. Matt is a Cubs fan, Ryan is a White Sox fan. Despite this seemingly insurmountable obstacle, their friendship has endured. Now roommates in a Wrigleyville apartment, they are joining forces to bring you two fans' respective takes on the Cubs, White Sox, and all things baseball.

Dare I say "Too Legit To Quit"

Posted by Ryan - May 22, 2008, 12:00 pm

Ahhh yes, nothing like pulling an MC Hammer reference out of the bag of tricks as I feel that the current winning streak has the Sox in a position of being "too legit to quit."

Might I also say that as of late the Sox have been enjoying their own "Hammer Time" as they continue to pummel the ball and have increased their team homerun total to 57, good for second in the AL.

Okay, I've just reached my quota of MC Hammer references for the season. In fact I think I've exceeded the quota by exactly two.

Anyway, when you dig deep into the meaning of Hammer's mind blowing lyrical genius, it actually makes much more sense in the sports world than that of the music world. Why do you think Isaiah Thomas, Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens and many other fine athletes all appeared in the "Too Legit to Quit" video? You know, before all the steroids, sexual harassment and alleged extramarital affairs with underage country singers. The '90s were such innocent times, were they not? Dare I say, U Can't Touch Them?

Now I'm really past quota.

(One more thing. Chris Mullin makes an appearance too? It's amazing Hammer never gained the kind of street cred he wanted with a posse like that.)

Back to the White Sox, whose fans know all too well, when your team is not legit enough to contend for a playoff spot, then you essentially quit on the current plan in place and go into developmental mode.

I will mention the White Flag trade of 1997 once and once only as reference to this despicable act.

Now, I'm well aware that it is still early in the season and that anything can happen between now and September ranging from Jose Contreras' mysterious arm slot troubles resurfacing to Carlos Quentin contracting leprosy.

That being said, winning seven games in a row, by scoring seven runs nonetheless (I like numbers), has me feeling even better about our chances to maintain our spot in the race for the division crown.

The question that faces the Sox is how the team will respond to the national media attention that will be knocking at the door of the clubhouse if they continue these slap-happy winning ways.  Hide the blow up dolls gentlemen....Swish I'm looking at you.  They have been flying under the radar as a contender to this point in the season, and the underdog role has fit swimmingly, like a comfy velour sweat suit—or at least I think that's how it fits.

Will the Sox maintain their legitimately legit legitness as the season pushes on?  A sweep of the Indians would do well in further anchoring the cozy feeling that having a division contender on the South Side conjures.

Editors Note:

My fingers were crossed throughout the entire writing of this post which if you're keeping track at home made the typing a rather arduous process.  I feel much more comfortable writing this while combating the jinx in that fashion, and I hope you all can rest easy with that precaution as well.

Calm down my friend, all is and will be well. I have a soothsayer's feeling about this. I've always wanted to be a soothsayer.

All this recent winning is entirely Ozzie Guillen and Jerry Reinsdorf's fault.

I can see it now: "Too Legit" becomes the "Don't Stop Beleivin" of 2008 and completely resurrects Hammer's career.

RYAN SAYS:

Only if they play the video in it's entirety on the jumbotron before every game, it's gold!

Really MC Hammer?

RYAN SAYS:

That's right Krause...I was inspired by the old school roller derby

There is a special place in the 4th circle of Hell for MC Hammer fans. And, just FYI, crossed fingers, jinxes and voodoo are for the Northside fans and ST writers only. You are better than that. Or, you should be.

RYAN SAYS:

Can't we all just realize the high level of comedy that the Too Legit to Quit video brings? I'm making fun of MC Hammer here people. Jokes.
