About this blog
Growing up three doors apart in the sleepy suburbs of Chicago, Matt Lynch and Ryan Pedersen could agree on many things. Baseball was not one of them. Matt is a Cubs fan, Ryan is a White Sox fan. Despite this seemingly insurmountable obstacle, their friendship has endured. Now roommates in a Wrigleyville apartment, they are joining forces to bring you two fans' respective takes on the Cubs, White Sox, and all things baseball.

Trying to get a win, and some perspective

Posted by Matt - April 3, 2008, 12:56 a.m.

Will the curse never end?

That's right. Four games since we started working on this here blog and not a single Chicago victory. One more winless day and we might have to scrap this baby before it even gets off the ground.

The ramifications of our short-lived curse, of course, are nothing compared to the impending 100th anniversary of Cubbie futility. Although I prefer to think of it as 10 decades. The smaller numbers help ease the pain.

Sigh.

For the record, I do not believe the Cubs are cursed in any way. The White Sox lost a World Series on purpose. The Red Sox traded the most legendary player ever. The Cubs denied admission to a farm animal who surely didn't appreciate any of the finer points of the game other than peanuts. What possible hierarchy of curses would lead to goat discrimination being the most worthy of eternal torment?

Curse or no, the Cubs' impending entrance into the century club (as the inaugural member) is here, and you might as well get used to it because you'll be hearing about all season. It's a storyline the media will beat into the ground, because of the following characteristics that tend to draw a media feeding frenzy:

  1. Round, easily remembered numbers.
  2. Pain and suffering.
  3. Scantily clad women (once the weather warms up).
  4. Alcohol-fueled irrational behavior.
  5. Irrational behavior (just the regular type).
  6. The Japanese.

I could go on, but those six are clearly the main factors at work here. For now I would like to focus on number five, because I swear I haven't been drinking.
