I'm not Digging these iPhone predictions

Sunday, August 24, 2008 -- 2:42 p.m. -- at my desk

NostrascottusIf you don't know who Kevin Rose is, he's a genius. He's the guy behind digg.com and, well, digg.com is pretty much one of the coolest spots on the Internet.

But Kevin Rose has this habit ... he likes to predict Apple rumors ... and, well, let's just say that he doesn't have the greatest track record. In fact, in all fairness, his track record stinks. He got one iPod rumor right a few years ago. So did I, by the way.

This time? Well, he says that the fat little iPod nano is going to get thin and tall again -- it's been reported before, but he claims to have a photo of it. He's also claiming big price drops across the iPod line and a few cosmetic changes to the iPod touch. But the big thing is that he's calling for 2.1 software to hit the touch before it hits the iPhone and he's calling for iTunes 8.0

That said, I'm going to offer my predictions, which I believe will end up being more accurate than Kevin Rose's

He's got a 50-50 shot at being correct. Is that really a prediction or a guess?

So that said, here are predictions not from me, but from the great NostraScottus ... I believe he is related to Nostradamus, but I'm not sure.

1. iPods will eventually be updated.

2. The price of iPods will eventually change to something other than what they are now. Maybe higher, maybe lower.

3. 2.1 software will come soon for the iPhone and iPod touch. It may or may not correct bugs that exist now and it may or may not add new features.

4. A 32GB iPhone will eventually be available.

5. 3G coverage may or may not improve.

6. Syncing and backing up may get faster at some point, but they may also get slower.

While some say it's fun to speculate, and although it can be, 9 times out of 10 it just makes us upset because we get our hopes so high that the letdown really, really stings.

What do you think? You buying Kevin Rose's predictions? You buying these? Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for calling.

Scott - those are some pretty safe predictions - you can't be wrong with the way you wrote them - Smart!

SCOTT"S REPLY: Why, thank you.

I saw the picture Kevin showed of what he thought the new iPod nano will look like and I'm just not buying the curved screen. If you think about it, flat screen TVs have been around for 5-6 years replacing what used to be a curved screen, why would apple go back to screen technology that changed 6 years ago? What they should do is have a HD screen that has the 16:9 ratio that the modern screens have. That said, I don't see the price of the iPods dropping that much because with new technology, Apple will most likely not offer the iPods close to the $100 range just to differentiate themselves from the price point of the iPhone at $199, because that is the discount, not the full price of it. I actually didn't qualify for the discount price because of my BlackBerry, and had to pay $399 for the 8GB, so I think the price of the new iPods will most likely stay where they are now. As you said, Scott, I think that we are not too far away from the 2.1 update, but I also don't know if that is going to be 2-3 weeks away like Kevin said because they NEED to make sure that this update will work for everyone and solve connectivity, battery, and backup problems people have been having across the board. I guess I'm not ruling out iTunes 8.0, but I don't know if the fixes and updates are going to be so drastic to not just go to 7.8. We'll see what happens though, I'm kind of excited for a major iPhone update that will hopefully fix all these problems we have been having.

SCOTT"S REPLY: I'm hoping for that too -- and I agree. What he thinks is coming just doesn't make sense .. and normally, when someone correctly guesses what Apple is going to do -- especially when there are photos involved, usually Apple demands they be taken down. So if I see that demand issued, I'll believe there's some truth. Until then, I don't believe it.

Ha ha, now "it" all makes sense; you are in fact the real genius behind Kevin Rose. Kev, the game is up!

SCOTT'S REPLY: lol

Hi Scott....off late it seems Apple has wisened up to the fact that people have wisened up to the fact that when Apple asks for pics to be taken down, it means the rumors are true....(phew...that was a long sentence....hope u got what i meant hehe)

Maybe the reason why they never responded to the first true pics of the iphone 3g (link below)

http://gizmodo.com/376207/is-this-the-back-of-the-3g-next+gen-iphone

I wouldnt bank on Apple's team to confirm rumours....the return of the thin nano seems imminent...(even though it may not be curved) I am not sure but its just a hunch....lets see what happens...

What i am hoping for is a 32gb iphone, which is unlocked, as im from india.....and desperately looking to get an Iphone thats Value-for-money (FYI, the 8gb iphone sells for Rs31000 or 715$ in india, 16gb for 830$)

Love ur blog..keep up the great work...

SCOTT'S REPLY: Oh, I got it ... and it's true. Very true. Yes, I heard about the pricing in India. Now those prices are without a contract, right? You aren't locked into a contract like we are here in the U.S., right? That's quite expensive. I wonder what happened to Steve's promise that no iPhone would cost more than $299 U.S. equivalent. I know I wasn't dreaming when he said that during the 3G announcement. I know I wasn't!!!
