« Server overload is causing activation slowdown | Main | iTunes servers seem ok »

Up and running here but problems continue worldwide

iPTIB's "Top 25 Moments in iPhone History"

1:34 p.m.
Breaking from lunch to tell you something important. I can't answer the comments now but I see plenty of you asking about my customer service experience.

First, the problem that Brian helped me with was an AT&T SIM card activation issue, which is very different from the iTunes problems you are having.

However, I had that problem first and here's my little secret that is making the rounds online and apparently working for others.

Plug in your iPhone and when you get the error in iTunes (whether it's 9802 or -4 or whatever), DO NOTHING. Don't clear the error by hitting OK. Just let it sit there with the error up. What I'm hearing and seeing from experience is that the update actually happens on its own but doesn't alert you to it.

In other words, while you are seeing this error box that looks like a dead end, you are in a line of people. Once it's your turn, your phone will update even though you still see that error box. I did that on a whim earlier and it worked for me.

It's hit or miss, but it might work and it's worth a try.

1:25 p.m.
I'm going to have some lunch and then go out and check out the lines around town again. Now that my iPhone is working, I can blog again! So see you soon!!

1:22 p.m.
App store on the iPhone. One word. WOW.
It's great in iTunes, but it's phenomenal in the mobile space. Wow.

1:10 p.m.
Wow. What a day. Right now, I'm syncing the new iPhone 3G with my itunes. Adding my music, my photos and all that other stuff. Of course, the whole process today was crazy, but the restore from backup -- the process of putting what was on the original iPhone onto this one was flawless. All my mail, notes, even alarm clock settings -- all there. Really nicely done, Apple. Wish I could say the same about your servers.

I never really pictured Apple having an IT department, although it does. I just figured that everyone was up on that stuff. But what genius decided to unleash all that furor on Apple's systems at the same time? I mean it was like they opened the flood gates -- activations, 2.0, mobile me -- all at once for the most part.

But in a span of 7 hours, I've done a lot. I met some really nice people at the line at the AT&T store on State Street. (I wonder if that guy got a white iPhone or a black one ... it was the great debate in line. Black ended up winning in the informal poll, but I think he had his heart set on white. Nothing wrong with that at all. I was going to consider white one last time but there were none out of the boxes that could be looked at so I picked black to be safe.

I also met some great people from AT&T. Really nice. It was most kind of them to ask me to blog from there. I did earlier, but sadly all the craziness made it harder to do. If I got the phone activated in the store, I might still be there now.

And I also solved and got help solving 2 major issues with my iPhone ... 1 Apple and 1 AT&T. Spoke to two kind customer service reps who got me on my way.

Next, it's finish syncing and then download 10.5.4 so I can get Mobile Me configured. Should be most exciting!!

1:04 p.m.
So I've been looking around to see what's new on the iPhone 3G ... and as we've said, there's not all that much. The internet over 3G is fast. It's not Wi-Fi, but it's not EDGE either. It's really nice if you are in an area with 3G. And even if you don't live in an area with it, if you travel to areas with it, it would be at least worth considering.

12:45 p.m.
Apple's servers are still having all kinds of trouble. I'm getting e-mails from around the world saying they're having problems activating. I have one very useful suggestion for you based on my own personal experience.

Plug in your iPhone and when you get an error, don't do anything for a while. The update may actually happen before the error is cleared. So, if you see an error, DON'T hit ok. Just let it sit and see if it updates by itself.

It's hit or miss, but it might work and it's worth a try.

12:22 p.m.
Wow. I'm so glad I got Brian on the phone. Seeing that 3G symbol and hearing how crystal clear his voice was was really nice. I mean, I haven't even tried an app from the app store yet and I'm this excited. I can't imagine what's going to happen in a little while.

I'm going to check out Wi-Fi on here and then report back so you all know how this thing works.

12:12 p.m.

THINGS ARE GREAT. Brian, from AT&T is a genius and I told him so. I haven't had customer service like that in a long time. What a nice and kind person, and not just because my phone is working. He listened to the problem and he said he'd get me up and running. Positive attitude and wow! He kept his promise.

I am now the proud owner of a working iPhone 3G.

The voice quality is CLEAR AS A BELL! Wow!!!

I can't believe it. I am just so amazed.

11:59 a.m.
Things aren't good.

My iPhone is bricked because AT&T's activation servers are down, according to Apple.

Apple says that most upgrades from one phone to the other are not going through correctly and that's why my phone is bricked.

He recommends going to an AT&T store to have them fix it in store. When I explained how logistically impossible that is today, he said he was sorry but there's nothing he can really do.

He gave me a number for AT&T support, but he said that they will just transfer me back to him because it's an iPhone and there's nothing he can do.

He says that there are bricked iPhones all over the country right now.

11:58 a.m.
Was waiting for Apple support and didn't know it. So he couldn't help me. All that for nothing.

11:40 a.m.
Got through. Here we go.

11:38 a.m.
All representatives are still busy. Please continue to hold for the next available representative. I want to hear that over and over. Seriously. I mean it. Because when that plays, the music doesn't. Oh mi gawd what language is this? I seriously don't know!

11:36 a.m.
Seriously ... if this music is on someone's iPod playlist? I'm going to find the person and take away his iPod. No person on Earth could have such bad taste. It's impossible.

11:34 a.m.
And to think ... today is free Slurpee day at 7-Eleven. Because it's 7.11. Right. Right. What flavor would I have gotten. Hmmm. I could go get one now and come back and I'd still be on hold. I just know it.

11:31 a.m.
So not to be too technical, but I've basically got my two iPhones in a big ol' pretzel. Yep. Pretzel.

See when you change from one phone to another, one SIM (the card that reads your number and other information) is deactivated and the other activated, leaving the old one useless.

What has clearly happened here is that the SIM information from the old phone never transferred to the new. But the calls are not really going anywhere -- they are in limbo. All my calls go straight to voicemail and obviously it's still set up for the old phone because it's my old outgoing message.

In this scenario with the new iPhone, voicemail is lost. We'll have to re-record the outgoing message. So the fact that the old is there shows me that the old SIM is very much working.

My guess is that once they come to talk to me in 2 minutes or 2 days that they will tell me that and transfer my SIM manually from one phone to the other. It will probably take a few minutes, but my iPhone 3G will eventually make calls and send texts and do all those great things.

11:28 a.m.
This marks an anniversary for me. 10 minutes on hold after being told 2 minutes or less.
OMG! The music. It's ... it's indescribable!

11:27 a.m.
Dear AT&T.
Your hold music sucks. It really does.
There's this thing called iTunes where you can choose cool songs. Check it out at apple.com/itunes.
Thanks.
Scott

11:24 a.m.
So I go to this other iPhone site that I check every once in a while because I like to look at what the competition is doing. Definitely not competition. Here's the story at the top, ok?

"iPhone 3G battery, screen are user-replaceable — sort of"

Great. That's helpful. Cross that off the competition list :-D

11:21 a.m.
It's been 3 minutes. That's not 2 minutes or less. That's 2 minutes or more. The voice didn't say more. He said less. He also said the call would be recorded for quality control purposes. Play it back!!

11:19 a.m.
I was supposed to walk into the AT&T store today at 8:45 and walk out at 9 with a totally usable iPhone 3G that I was going to show to people waiting in line. Instead, I'm on my couch holding for tech support. The best part of today is blogging with all of you, but still ... not in the official plans.

11:18 a.m.
Your estimated wait time is 2 minutes or less.

Fingers crossed!

11:16 a.m.
All iPhone representatives are busy. We are experiencing extended hold times. (I wonder why). You may want to call back later.

No. I really don't. I am not happy at this moment. I'm usually a happy blogger, but right now, I'm not. This was not in my plans for launch day.

11:09 a.m.
I will be back soon. I'm going to call customer service for my iPhone for the first time. I'll be back soon to tell you all about the experience.

11 a.m.
I need AT&T help, i think.

My phone finally connected to iTunes. Restored from backup, looks normal.

But ... my calls all go to voicemail and my new iPhone says NO SERVICE. My old one has edge and can make calls but can't receive them.

It's like limbo. Is this supposed to happen?

10:57 a.m.
THE WAIT!! Ugh.

10:54 a.m.
My stomach aches. I have never been so nervous about an upgrade. I have no idea if the server will conk out in the middle. Here's hoping I have good news soon.

10:51 a.m.
IT'S WORKING. RESTORING NOW. MORE SOON. YAY!

10:45 a.m.
Remember War Games? "We have a Soviet Missile Detection launch." I repeat .. We have a Soviet Missile Detection launch.

Here's my version.

We have an ACTIVATION ALERT. We have an Activation Alert.

I never heard of that. It's on my screen and it says: "No signal detected. Signal is required to complete activation.

So does that mean I can't activate because there's no signal, or do I not have a signal because I can't activate.

I admit it. Your iPhone blogger is confused. There. I said it.

10:43 a.m.
WEIRD ... WEIRD ... no movement in iTunes. Still stuck, but my iPhone 3G went from emergency call only brick to an iPhone minus the activation -- so no signal, no calls, nothing. Can't sync it, but I have the main screen with the icons. I didn't even realize that could happen.

10:38 a.m.
Overheard on the Internets:

"Best comment of the day from the guy in the office next door --- Vista may be a bad OS, but at least it never trashed my cell phone."

Mmmm-hmmmm.

10:35 a.m.
Excuse my French, but WTF is a -4 iTunes error? I know what it is, it's the error preventing me from getting my iPhone 3G activated. It's making Scott angry. Angry!! If I turn green, then I'm just in trouble.

10:34 a.m.
I GOT THROUGH!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO... i've been trying for the last 1.5 hours. i just kept clicking the music menu, then iphone. each time i got the error message: click okay, click music, click iphone. good luck everyone! cant wait to see what develops throughout the day!

Another lucky person. I'm so happy to hear. I don't know where this person was from, though ... but either way, great news.

10:31 a.m.
I've got two lucky folks so far that have said that they got their phone to activate. It took a lot of work, though.

"To get my activation to work, I repeatedly ejected the iPhone in iTunes, unplugged the Dock Connector/USB Cable, and replugged it in. After 5 attempts with the error messages in between, it finally worked. It takes much patience, though."

I've been doing this, but so far there's been nothing happening with the phone. Just that waiting for iTunes thing that's driving me insane.

10:25 a.m.
Caller Jay just e-mailed me from Washington, D.C. with something that made me laugh for the first time since this debacle started.

"I would not want to be in the same room with Steve Jobs just about now."

Jay, that's pretty darn good and so true. ... The guy probably blew his top 100 times today.

10:23 a.m.
So far, the worldwide community of iPTIB has been out in full force today keeping me up to speed on what's happening with what Gizmodo is cleverly calling the "iPocalypse."

It's true. It really is.

I have e-mails from New Zealand to London to Washington, D.C. to New York and many other places telling me of similar experiences. Bricked phones, stores unable to complete activations, some stores sending people to other stores for help ... It's an absolute nightmare if your plan today was to get a new 3G iPhone in 10 minutes and walk around rubbing it in the face of your non-upgrading or buying friends.

10:20 a.m.
Also, according to AT&T ... on that two-part tether process.

I asked if the information entered into the computer -- name, plan, phone number -- is what makes iTunes able to recognize the upgrade when we do it at home, and the answer to that is yes.

Now if I could get Apple to be as informative and helpful as AT&T so I can get some answers about the servers.

10:15 a.m.
I just exchanged an e-mail with an official AT&T spokesperson, who summed up what I stated below:

"There's a worldwide issue with iTunes that Apple is working to resolve. We're signing people up for service in the AT&T stores -- their plan, their phone number, etc. The final step is to tether to iTunes. We were doing that for customers in our stores, but while Apple is working to resolve the iTunes issue, we're having customers do the iTunes synch later at home (or in the office...wherever they prefer to synch to iTunes)."

So basically, the in-store activation process is a two-part process and this year, both parts were to be done in store. Now, it's one part and the other part is at home. Which is fine ... provided it actually works at some point.

Kudos, to AT&T ... for letting people do this ... no use keeping people in line when it's hot and humid out.

10:08 a.m.
Wow. If you go to Apple's iTunes download page, you'll find that the download section is gone. It's like it was wiped off the face of the Earth. This server overload much be much worse than originally thought. And now, unfortunately, once they are back online, the race will be on in stores and at home between 2.0 and activations. Apple has one choice here ... bring the servers back, shut off the 2.0 upgrades and set up servers to handle activations at one point and upgrades at another. Clearly, they cannot co-exist.

10:04 a.m.
Still waiting for official word from Apple on this ... I truly don't expect to hear anything back from them. But it's easy to understand why the servers are so overloaded. Why, Apple ... would you possibly release Mobile Me -- or try to -- it hasn't worked either -- and activations and 2.0 software at the same time. The 2.0 download was available 20 minutes before activations began in the Central Time Zone. I don't understand that kind of thinking, Apple. Really not very forward.

10 a.m.
Here's a screenshot sent in from the U.K. that shows the extent of the worldwide problem. Some of us are lucky just to get this screen! Most times, it's not this pleasant.

Bud

9:50 a.m.
According to AT&T representatives at the State Street Apple Store, the server problems affecting activation there are affecting activation problems everywhere -- and at home. We were told that while activations were supposed to be in store that they can actually be done at home online, just like they could with the original iPhone. We were asked to do it that way in order to keep the line moving.

9:31 a.m.
I'm home now. My old iPhone isn't working and the new one can't be activated because of an iTunes error that is apparently a worldwide problem with the servers.

I'm no tech person, but with the worldwide launch of iPhone 3G and the 2.0 software, even Apple's massive servers can't handle the load. Sometimes, it seems as though its servers are pretty crappy in general.

Anyhow, remember ... even though the activation was being done at AT&T and Apple stores, well, all they are doing is plugging into iTunes. So it's the same thing as if you got to do it at home.

And that's what happened to me ... AT&T came to us in line and let us know that there were server overload issues and that no representatives were able at this time to activate phones. So, in order to keep the line moving -- which was wonderful of AT&T -- they sent us home with our iPhones and told us to complete the install there.

So it can be installed at home just like last year. So that's a good thing.

But, because the servers are all completely down, the iTunes store just says accessing ... forever and ever and ever.

And .. what worries me is the activation process. Will my new iPhone actually ever activate? I don't really know. I know that as soon as the servers are fixed that it should, but I worry that a step was missed earlier ... That's just likely me worrying for nothing, but right now we have a situation where no one can really do much of anything.

You can check out the absolute anger here in this Apple discussions post ... There's a thing in there about clicking on music and then clicking on the iPhone over and over to hold your place in line and get you to a server, but it doesn't do anything, unfortunately except show accessing over and over and over and over. It's not actually activating at this time.

What an absolute mess. I'm going to look around for more information and try to contact Apple and get back to you as soon as I can.

I won't be replying to many comments as I research, but I'll approve them as I go.

Thanks for calling.

9:11 am -- got phone ... But ...

AT&T could not activate. Going home to try it but was told it may be a long while. Servers overloaded on iTunes, I'm told.

Open a cold one and prepare to wait. Been trying to activate for nearly an hour.

The upgrade to 2.0 on older iPhones bricks the phone as well. Called Apple...said to just keep trying.

Posted by: Inquisitor | Jul 11, 2008 9:19:00 AM

I keep getting a -9838 error whenever I try downloading 2.0 and now my phone has effectively been bricked. And I leave for a plane trip in a couple of hours. Apparently, the Apple Support Discussion Forums are showing lots of people encountering this problem, with a ton of frustration. This is not a good way to start the new gen of hardware/software folks!

Posted by: Michael Moon | Jul 11, 2008 9:19:19 AM

Same thing happened in the UK. A friend queued all night, purchased at 8.03 but had to wait over 3 hours for activation. But they are happily up and running now.

Posted by: Kim | Jul 11, 2008 9:19:53 AM

i was so excited - got iTunes software downloaded right away, downloaded the new iPhone software right away, waited for all of the backup processes, and waited, and waited......then, "We could no complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838)

....arg

Posted by: bill | Jul 11, 2008 9:22:17 AM

overload is an understatement... its is guessing that overall it will take about an hour to download 2.0 through itunes...

Posted by: Ben F | Jul 11, 2008 9:25:02 AM

Wow, like who cares? I don't. But I find it amusing some geek tool is blogging this. Man, Apple customers are such sheep. I can think of better things to do than to stand in line for a stupid cell phone. Like relaxing at home and laughing at some dork Apple fan.

Posted by: James | Jul 11, 2008 9:25:32 AM

Does your 3G screen look yellower than the 2G one? Macrumors is going crazy with people having yellower/warmer colors in the 3G phone? Thanks.

Posted by: Roy | Jul 11, 2008 9:28:45 AM

Did you go with the black or white?

Posted by: Boya | Jul 11, 2008 9:32:55 AM

I tried to update my old iPhone to 2.0 this morning. It could not complete because of iTunes Server overload. (Error -9838). The same thing has happened to my son and several business associates.

Posted by: James Hulme | Jul 11, 2008 9:37:54 AM

I'M ON!

Old phone, but new software - can't wait to play!

Posted by: | Jul 11, 2008 9:37:56 AM

Hmmm, I started downloading 2.0 BEFORE I read everyones comments. It is taking a long time to download

Posted by: | Jul 11, 2008 9:43:51 AM

I received the same errors earlier. Folks just have to patient and keep trying. It took me about 15-20 minutes before things finally got done correctly (I'm upgrading an iPhone Original). I'm syncing all of my old music, contacts, etc. right now, so hopefully I'll be able to get on and play with it soon.

Posted by: Joe | Jul 11, 2008 9:46:35 AM

Update to my previous comment:

It appears that, after about a 45-minute wait trying to access the iTunes Store and getting the Error -9838, that my non-3G iPhone is now re-activated. Now iTunes is restoring/syncing all of the music and video I had on my phone pre-2.0 software install, from the backup. That's taking a bit of time (not unexpectedly, it's just a data transfer issue), but I'm crossing my fingers for when I can finally unplug it, post-sync, and start to test out the new options.

Posted by: David | Jul 11, 2008 9:48:13 AM

Scott, I missed you at the State Street AT&T as I was number 6 in line. They couldn't activate my phone either, but it finally went through when I got home after 5 tries. Good luck to you. Keep hope alive! Also, I am thankful to RedEye for the gum.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I'm so sorry! I was 24. I thought I caught everyone there. My sincerest apologies!! Wow. You got yours to go through? What's your secret? You are one of the lucky few. Glad you liked the gum.

Posted by: MacFreak | Jul 11, 2008 10:02:53 AM

this is total crap! i have an iphone from january 2008 and when i upload the new 2.0, i have to reactivate? what about some preferential treatment for those NOT recently joining the coolest group of phone owners ever?! would have been nice to have our software before the masses got up this morning and mucked everything up. :-(

Posted by: | Jul 11, 2008 10:05:23 AM

I'm not getting the screen; I either get a time out error or an immediate "can't establish secure connection," which is totally bogus.

Didn't they sort of realize what was going to happen today?

Posted by: 4 Gig Greg | Jul 11, 2008 10:07:35 AM

Scott - for those of us who didn't have one last time and for whom the people at the AT&T store failed to mention that they hadn't activated the phone... Is there any trick to doing it online or is it self-explanatory? Thanks!

SCOTT'S REPLY: Cassie, I'm having no luck, but here's what someone in Chicago posted a minute ago that might help:

To get my activation to work, I repeatedly ejected the iPhone in iTunes, unplugged the Dock Connector/USB Cable, and replugged it in. After 5 attempts with the error messages in between, it finally worked. It takes much patience, though.

OH Thank you for posting this! I've been sitting here freaking out before I googled the error -9838 and found your post. But I admit I was also selfishly wondering if I broke my phone and would need to go get the 3G - haha

SCOTT'S REPLY: You are all good, Melody. You still have to wait, but you've done nothing wrong.

Can someone tell me why they didn't start the 2.0 upgrades on the existing iphones a couple of days ago instead of trying to do it all at once? The flood of people getting the new phones, combined with all the people upgrading existing phones means everybody loses when it comes to upgrading/activating. Once that version was out yesterday (via Mac Rumors) they should have released and allowed iphone users to get a head start on the 3G folks. Just my opinion....

Hey scott, I was able to upgrade to 2.0 on the orig iPhone. it took over an hour. it is sweet, although now when i plug in to my laptop, it gives me an error and says connection reset. i dont' need the i tunes store, i just want to see my phone in iTunes. i can't even do that. so i can't change music or do anything

Scott have checked with Homeland Security to make sure this not some type of terrorist attack?

I got the -4 error as well, but the next "Okay, Music, iPhone" cycle activated my iPhone and I was good to go! Weird thing about it was that iTunes said that it was still trying to connect to the store, but I pulled the phone off the dock and it was updated and ready to go!

Probably never have been so angry in my life. AT&T totally dropped the ball. Waited in line at 5:30 a.m. only to be told at 10 that they could not sell phones to existing customers who were not upgrade eligible - even though the sheet they handed out in line had the $399 and $499 options for purchasing early upgrades. Spent 45 minutes on the phone in the store with an AT&T customer service rep who said the store should be able to do it, by overriding the system. However, the manager was too incompetent to know how to do this and couldn't get any other managers from other stores on the phone to figure it out. Apparently this is a widespread problem. See - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=516647

What a way to treat your customers. I knew going in that I wasn't eligible for the $199/$299 phone and would have to pay full price. This is just unbelievable.

Just got an e-mail offering a sweet deal on a Blackberry. How did they know? ;-)

Still trying to wake my brick. Bogosity at every turn, and I like the term iPocalypse!

Well, after a 10 hour wait and being the first person in Waco, Texas to get one, I hit the same snag as everyone else. The whole click Music and then iPhone FINALLY worked for me, and my phone is up and running. Good luck to everyone out there. Just keep trying.

"i just kept clicking the music menu, then iphone. each time i got the error message: click okay, click music, click iphone."

Tried it and it worked in about 15 minutes.

Insult to injury...dot mac is crashed and dot me not available. So if you keep, I don't know, work information on dot mac and need it...YOU'RE SCREWED....I hate you Steve Jobs...no more multi-platform same-day launches

I bought 2 this morning (family plan), and one got the AT&T text msg that it's activated. It has a signal and I'm pretty sure it can make calls, but iTunes doesn't recognize it. Still trying to get the other one activated. :'(

So I stood in line for 2 hours at an AT&T store, which then sold out before I got close. I'm back at my computer; I plugged in my iphone (original) and flawlessly downloaded 2.0. Then some stuff happened, and after quite a while, the install process appeared to be complete, including the restore. Them the iphone icon showed up in iTunes, but without the normal stuff on the main screen; that's where it is now -- hanging on connection to the itunes store. Am I screwed?

My iPhone has activated and now it is syncing.. progress!!

Why, why, why do I always fall for the lure of the new iphone firmware? I should know better by now.

3 hours trying to finish my 2.0 update, still no love from the activation server.

"To get my activation to work, I repeatedly ejected the iPhone in iTunes, unplugged the Dock Connector/USB Cable, and replugged it in. After 5 attempts with the error messages in between, it finally worked. It takes much patience, though."

I have the NO SERVICE notice as well. The AT&T representative told me I would receive a call asking me to confirm my contract agreement before I could be added back to the network. This may have something to do with it?

Posted by: MacFreak | Jul 11, 2008 11:11:16 AM

Scott, when you transfer your old phone to your new phone, your old phone can still receive calls while your new one won't work for a bit. This is because they have not "fully" transferred your information from the old to the new. This happens with other phones not just the Iphone so good luck.

Pray for me as I try to get my phone this afternoon...I can't believe people want to buy my 4gb for 175!!

this sucks soo much

I finally got through on iTunes. I first kept plugging and unplugging the USB cord until another post noted that you could get a "retry" by just clicking on something else in iTunes (like Movies) and then clicking back on your iPhone device. My original iPhone is now upgraded to 2.0. It will be interesting to see how Apple spins this.

in order to speed up the process go into your iPhone and turn off the contacts and calendar mobile me settings...

It looks like they did a partial unbrick over-the-air (cellular) since I was getting the dreaded -9838 error + emergency slider. Then I got an SMS message from AT&T on the phone and it unlocked and I can make calls, etc. Just no iTunes goodness yet.

This is most annoying because I used the upgrade on my moms line and was able to call att cs to get her sim card swapped out but now I have my sim in the iPhone with her having the data plan and I can't do anything till I can activate it.

Scott, what are you hoping to accomplish with customer service?

Posted by: David | Jul 11, 2008 11:27:36 AM

Whilst constantly trying to reconnect to iTunes I noticed that Mobile Me is up and running. Slightly more interesting to look at than the iTunes barber pole!

Posted by: | Jul 11, 2008 11:31:27 AM

I slipped my old iPhone sim card into my iPhone 3G (sold old 8GB on ebay for $450) and the NO SERVICE message is gone. I called a random contact and the AT&T automated service asked me to activate my contract terms. Once accepted, they send a text message (instructions) to allow you to use the new iPhone. Hope this helps?

My iPhone was a Brick!

After trying for awhile (An hour or so), finally connected and the phone is activated.

I'm getting the error "We could not complete your itunes store request. the network connection timed out."

Is this what the rest of you guys are getting after the update to 2.0 on the old I phone?

Posted by: stephen | Jul 11, 2008 11:42:08 AM

I can buy a song off the iTunes phone, but it can't get me my iPhone back online. Sounds fishy to me.

Posted by: Catherine Kelly | Jul 11, 2008 11:45:13 AM

I just updated to 2.0, and I am having the same problem as you, Stephen

Posted by: Bryan | Jul 11, 2008 11:46:21 AM

Stephen, this is what I'm getting as well. My upgrade went real smooth. But, I have been trying to activate for over 3 hours now out of Denver and no luck. This has been a very bad day for the iPhone. I was real excited to try and connect up to my corporate exchange server. Probably won't get to try that today.
