Apple FINALLY talks about MobileMe mess

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 -- 10 p.m. -- at my desk

Posted on Apple's support site tonight for all to see:

MobileMe: Important information regarding email service interruption
Last Modified: July 22, 2008
Updated: July 22, 2008, 4 p.m. PDT.

Symptom: On Friday, July 18, 2008 (2008-07-18) we experienced a serious issue with one of our MobileMe mail servers. This issue is currently affecting approximately 1% of MobileMe members. Affected members are unable to send or receive email at www.me.com or access email using any email client software such as Mail on a Mac or Microsoft Outlook on a PC.

Resolution: We understand this is a serious issue and apologize for this service interruption. We are working hard to restore your service.

So there you have it ... Even when there's no actual answer, it's ALWAYS nice when Apple acknowledges the problem. It seems to make it better knowing that they know.

Thanks for calling.

mobile me? more like mobile mess...

SCOTT'S REPLY: Yes, for now ... but like I said in the other posts ... I think we are testing MobileMe for something much bigger.

Scott,

one of the biggest problems I have seen w/ MobileMe is the convesion between .mac and me.com. The documentation on how to change it's functioning on Mac Mail so that when you send messages they send by default w/ the me.com address instead of . mac and the same is true for the iPhone. When I change one and or both when I sync the iPhone w/ the cable it brings everything back to .mac settings. They need to document that better.
I have tried deleting both accounts on both and starting from scratch but the iPhone backup still has the original and brings it all back.

It is all quite confusing

SCOTT'S REPLY: Sadly, Neil, your last sentence is the truth .. it is all quite confusing.

If we are testing for something bigger, they should be paying us!!

When you said MobileMe should be free, I wasn't really on board with that. I don't mind paying for services I use. But, since then I've changed my mind. I now agree with you. Except for the fact I use it to host my family websites-don't know what Apple would do with that. But, with all the bugs (& I certainly knew there were bugs before MobileMe) they should not charge until it runs like a charm.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I can see both sides of it, Eleanor ... and Apple knows that we are all testers ... to give it to iPhone users would just be a great show of faith in the core customer base.
