No. 14: Apple adds ringtones to iTunes store iPTIB is counting down the top 25 moments in iPhone history -- 1 a day until the iPhone 3G launches on July 11.
Ringtones were a sore spot on the first generation iPhone, mostly because there were few ways to really personalize the iPhone without jailbreaking or unlocking. Folks who didn't want to go that route were stuck with stock sounds that were cute to start but got old fast.
And then ... on Sept. 5, Apple offers a custom ringtone builder in iTunes and promised 50,000 songs. A little bell icon next to the song indicated that it could be a ringtone, but, there was a catch ... you had to pay 99 cents for the song AND the ringtone. So if you already owned the song, it was 99 cents extra. If you didn't own the song, it was $1.98.
Since then, there are ways to get free ringtones, but this was a big deal and while there were lots of complaints about the cost involved, it was still a way to personalize our precious iPhones.

I find it so hard to believe when I've heard people complain about the cost of the ringtones!! It's cheaper than any carrier that I know of, plus you KEEP them, unlike at least one nameless carrier who makes you repurchase them after a year. But, I make my own from CD's.
But. That's a definite plus for Apple. The ringtones that came on the phone were pretty sad.
