It's time to think beyond 3G

How can I say that when the 3G iPhone hasn't even been released?

Read this and it will make much more sense, I think.

And feel free to discuss in the comments.

Thanks for calling.

Here's the way it is at my place: my phone carrier, ATT; the wife's, Verilzon; my tv: Dish Network; my internet provider: Time-Warner/Roadrunner.

It will be interesting to see if they all come together.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I hope they do ... there's no reason it has to be so confusing.

I'll believe after it arrives and I see it. So many times this sort of projection of technological wonder ends up being farce. Much of what we're reading about this now is dreamed up and wordsmithed/crafted by seasoned marketers paid to feed the public with vistas of wonder and utopian bliss. I've seen it before with technology, and a lot can go wrong in a few years in an alliance such as this WiMax one. I'm no marketing Cool-Aid junkie. But I'll admit the dream is compelling. An iPhone on such a network would be a true marvel.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Absolutely, Michael ... and I've read a lot of disclaimers on this WiMax story -- if the funding can be secured, etc., etc. So yeah, it's going to take more than talk to get it done. But if there's a company who probably wants to see it happen now, it's Sprint. When I think of Sprint now, I think auto racing before I think telecommunications. That's probably not what they would want to hear.

Funny, Scott, when I think of Sprint, I think of people sprinting to sign up with a competitor after their Sprint contract lapses. Maybe at auto racing speed! They can't wait to get their Nextel-ephone through the new carrier.

SCOTT'S REPLY: HA!
