iPhone ringtones you can subscribe to

OK, this is really cool. Here's a ringtone service that you can subscribe to by the week or year, and the ringtones are delivered like podcasts - automatically.

Not a bad idea. Of course, you may not like every ringtone that's delivered to you, but this is some creative thinking and for $1.98 a month, it's not a bad risk-reward ratio at all.

According to Klaus from ringtonefeeder, that $1.98 buys you a minimum of 4 new ringtones per month and the 5 most recent upon sign up, giving new subscribers at least 9 tones for that first payment of $1.98.

Check it out here.

And if you do choose to subscribe, let me know what you think.

Thanks for calling.

Why pay for it if you can make them yourself in iTunes.....?????? Seems to me it's a wast of time and money..

SCOTT'S REPLY: Well, you certainly can make them yourself, but not everyone likes to make them themselves. Some people just prefer simple and this is definitely simple.

At nakko.com we have had the same service for months now (we were actually the first with the podcast method) with thousands of ringtones to choose from.

The best thing is: it is FREE!

You can also create your own ringtones with the very easy to use online ringtone editor.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Interesting. Thanks for the heads up.

Some people like it simple???? There's nothing more simple than making your own ringtones in iTunes.... Even my kid sister (6 years old) can do it.... That's all for now....

SCOTT'S REPLY: Well, easy or not, the fact that your 6-year-old sister can create a ringtone in iTunes is quite impressive.

Hi Scott,

I am from RingtoneFeeder, thanks for covering the story, we really appreciate that.

First a correction:
The price for RingtoneFeeder is $1.98 per month and not $1.99 a week. For that you get minimum 4 new ringtones in a a month and the 5 latest as soon as you sign up so effectively a new subscriber is getting at least 9 tones for $1.98 the first month.

For the first comment: If you make ringtones out of songs in iTunes you pay $0.99 for each one you make on top of the cost of the song itself, but maybe that was not what you referred to?

Secondly, yes there are free ringtones all over the place and yes the delivery mechanism is not hard to replicate - it is just an rss feed - but that is not really the point of this service.

These tones are made by an artist to be unique, humorous and optimized to sound great on the iPhone. This is of course not for everyone, but for those who appreciate Geoff Smith's musical style and talent. In the future we hope that additional artists will be joining the concept.

Personally I don't think that everything in the world should necessarily be free and If I like something that other people are spending time creating I have no problem supporting them with a bit of cash which will usually lead to more and better products in the future.

Just my $0.05

SCOTT'S REPLY: Thanks for writing in, Klaus. And forgive me for my mistake. I'll correct that right now.
