iPhone free Wi-Fi from AT&T is NOT official - no matter what you read anywhere else
Thursday, May 8, 2008 -- 3:52 p.m. -- at my desk
Even if it's working again, the reports on almost all of the other sites indicating that free Wi-Fi from AT&T is officially back are incorrect.
The information pictured no longer indicates free Wi-Fi service, which it did earlier today. And my AT&T representative contacted me to tell me that she can't comment just yet but will let me know when AT&T has an official statement.
So while I'm not sure what all the up and down stuff is all about, let me assure you that this service isn't official yet. And as long as it's not official, you should know in case there are charges to be incurred.
I'll let you know when the light is officially green and stays green.
Thanks for calling.

Went to my local starbucks today for my free wifi: no such luck. I got a very long search screen (SBC Global security, it said), then finally a sign in screen requiring user id, password, none of which I had.
It will be amusing to finally understand what the heck is happening here!
SCOTT'S REPLY: Doesn't seem like anyone knows what's going on here, so it should be interesting. But, yes, the service is unavailable at this time ... no doubt it's coming, but not quite yet.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Sure. Free Wi-Fi from AT&T is not being offered on the iPhone at this time.
Posted by: Ma Bell | May 8, 2008 11:47:15 PMJust want to say that I was able to connect at Starbucks in Mequon, Wisconsin. I think Starbucks, in particular, is making a good move here. They've finally awakened to smell the coffee, finally taking action to offer free Wi-Fi like all their competitors are already doing. AT&T was a natural fit for them.
SCOTT'S REPLY: Well, Steve, once they get all the kinks worked out and decide if they want it turned on for more than 5 minutes at a time, I think it's a fantastic idea and I couldn't agree with you more.
