FlyTunes expands, looks pretty sweet

Thursday, May 15, 2008 -- 11:13 a.m. -- on my couch

FlyAs you know from my previous posts, I'm a radio junkie. I enjoy good music, but I also really enjoy streaming local radio stations over iTunes.

I wrote about FlyTunes a while back, but it's gotten better with the introduction today of video and audio podcasts. There's now more than 350 channels to choose from.

Truth be told, FlyTunes looks more like free satellite radio for your iPhone or iPod touch than anything else and that's a good thing, callers.

What I like is the attention to detail. There's even iconography to indicate which channels stream effectively over EDGE and which don't. That's a nice touch, because I don't want to have to find out for myself and waste time.

And the types of stations are certainly growing. I see a lot here that interests me.

What's still missing is my Pittsburgh radio station -- KDKA 1020. As the first AM radio station, it deserves a place on every service, but I'm sure the fine folks at FlyTunes are working on that as we speak.

Oh, and as I mentioned briefly above ... it doesn't cost anything to use the service. And when you go to http://www.FlyTunes.fm on your computer, you see a simulator and lots of great information. I've tried it on the iPhone of course, and it works well -- just as advertised.

If you haven't checked out this service, I highly recommend it. So far, FlyTunes has done what XM and Sirius have not. And it is now fair to compare FlyTunes with those household names, at least in my book.

Do let me know what you think.

Thanks for calling.

Hi Scott,

I wanted to thank you for a great article about FlyTunes. I have contacted KDKA 1020 and waiting for a response. I will ping you when we have the station up and streaming. Stay FlyTuned!

Thanks Again,

SCOTT'S REPLY: Oh you are most welcome, Byron. You are offering a really well-thought out product. And thanks for contacting KDKA -- they are in iTunes, so hopefully that's an easy add.
