3G iPhone: They're here!

Friday, May 30, 2008 -- 11:12 a.m. -- on my couch

PoltergeistI remember when I was a kid ... Little Carol Ann's innocent voice saying "they're here!" meant the monsters were coming. The monsters had arrived.

Today, the monster is the 3G iPhone and it too is here.

Forbes has a great piece called "New iPhone is Already Here" (link), and while there isn't anything particularly groundbreaking about the article, Forbes does an excellent job breaking down what's been speculated on up until now and puts in perspective with the timeframe of WWDC in a few weeks and the end of the year.

My take is that whenever it's announced (June 9 is pretty much a given now) and the moment it's available to everyone around the world (could be a slight delay and could be staggered), it's going to change the communications world yet again. If Apple was able to do what it did with a version 1.0 product in just a handful of countries, imagine what they are poised to do with a more powerful device in a boatload of countries?

Whether you are an Apple fan or iPhone geek or cell phone person -- or just someone who enjoys a good success story, it's hard to ignore the power that Steve Jobs and Apple possess.

And it's hard to ignore that they are about to unleash that power on billions of anxious people.

And for all of you who remember the movie or need a flashback ... this line about sums it up: The storm is getting closer.

Thanks for calling.

So am I going to have to stop reading this blog once the 3G comes out? I don't plan on upgrading handsets, but the way it sounds, you've already moved on. If you wouldn't mind, could you list other blogs that will continue to tell me about new and interesting iPhone upgrades and accessories?

SCOTT'S REPLY: Kevin, you don't have to worry a single bit about me not covering the original iPhone. I will cover it as long as it exists. The software that's coming will work on the old iPhone as well as the new, however, I expect certain features to not work on the old because of hardware (3G, GPS, etc). But all of those SDK apps -- as long as there's no specific requirement that's not present in your old phone (like video, for example) will work and I will cover that just as I always have. And I'll cover the new. I'm still a one-man show, so it's hard to do it all, but believe me ... I'm not about to abandon the folks that made this blog so popular.

You have my word on that.
