Crain's Chicago Business, a reputable publication here in the Windy City, has a story about the progress at Block 37 -- the 278,000 square foot mixed-use development in the heart of Downtown Chicago's Loop.
According to Joseph Freed and Associates LLC, the master developer for the 108 North State Street project, "this new iconic development will feature approximately 278,000 square feet of unique retail, dining, and entertainment space within a five-story atrium (topped by a green roof providing views for the residential components) adjacent to an office media tower, anchored by an interactive CBS 2 Chicago broadcasting studio."
Back to Crain's ... they report that Apple is closer to signing a lease to bring Downtown Chicago its 2nd Apple store. The first is several blocks north on Michigan Avenue. Apparently, Apple has been a goal for this project from the start, and new details state that a deal may be closer than ever for Apple to lease a space that could be as large as 6,000 square feet.
This is good for Chicago, and good for me ... putting an Apple store just about 6 blocks from my front door is genius of Steve Jobs.
So far, a gym, movie theater, restaurant and other big retail names have signed.
We'll see when the dust settles if an Apple logo is left shining through.
And here's a photo from the Chicago Tribune from late last year that gives an overall view of the area -- construction is further along now, although the promised spring 2008 completion date has come and gone.
Thanks for calling.
