Good news for folks in Ireland who want an 8GB iPhone right now ... following in the footsteps of O2 UK, O2 Ireland is dropping the price €100 from €399 to €299.
Of course, the 3G iPhone is coming very, very soon ... presumably to Ireland, but that's not known for sure. So the question is a hard one ... pay a little less for some iPhone love now or wait patiently for what should be the 3G iPhone and pay an unknown price.
It's not an easy decision to make, but at least know that there's some good news for the current crop of 8GB iPhones.
Thanks for calling.

Jeez you were quick to put that up! I'm in Ireland and I was in an 02 Ireland shop yesterday, and first I heard of this deal was here on your site, fair play to ya.
This price reduction is great, as hopefully a few more people will buy iPhones, they won't be seen as so expensive or exclusive anymore, and with a bit of luck it's a sign that the new 3G iPhone will be out in Ireland soon too. Now if they could just throw a few more texts into my plan and I'd be a happy camper indeed.
SCOTT'S REPLY: You know what's funny about that, Pat? Usually, I am in contact with the rep at O2 in Dublin and he lets me know about this. This time he didn't and I just happened to find it while I was doing my check of the o2.ie Web site. Good thing!!
Posted by: Pat | May 10, 2008 8:01:02 AMThe online store (U.S.) is out too and so is my local Apple store and they didn't sound too sure of getting more...........methinks we may see the next gen before WWDC. Bets anybody?
Maybe iPTIB would have a drawing for its faithful readers for a brand new 2nd gen iPhone.!!! :-)
SCOTT'S REPLY: Hmmmm. You never know.

april 16th or so when STG£100 discount from 8GB phone in the UK. STG£100 = €126. so we wait best part of 4 weeks for a discount that's €26 LESS than the discount on the UK phone which WAS ALREADY CHEAPER TO START WITH ??!?!
what exactly are we all so thrilled about, again?
my advice to O2: MUST TRY HARDER. seriously. i'm finding this attitude on their part to be unbelievably arrogant.
i'd really be obliged if you'd pass this comment on to your contact in O2.
SCOTT'S REPLY: I'm happy to pass along feedback to O2. From what I understand from them, they are basing prices on typical phone prices in Ireland. Do you find that the iPhone is on par with any other phone in Ireland or is it just the iPhone that is so expensive?
Posted by: elfneedsfoodbadly | May 11, 2008 9:05:48 PMI understand that from July 11 we will get free wi-fi spots here on O2 Ireland through a company called bitbuzz (bitbuzz.com), following the example of O2 UK and The Cloud. This is a great development, even though bitbuzz seem to be kind of in their infancy. The best thing is that this will include hotspots in Northern Ireland. It's very annoying living close to the border and suddenly finding your iPhone doesn't work (for data anyway) once you cross into 'the six counties' or 'the North' or 'Norn Iron'... So in the future perhaps this will be mitigated by lots of hotspots. At the moment there are only 5 hotspots in Northern Ireland, but hopefully that will increase quickly.
SCOTT'S REPLY: I hope so, for you, too. I think this is great and I look forward to something similar here in the States and hope that other countries get this as well.
Posted by: Pat | Jun 11, 2008 9:05:25 PMI was looking at O2 Ireland's new tariffs for iPhone 3G on their website, which incidentally are exactly the same as the old tariffs, except for the fact there is no mention whatsoever of voicemail. The old tariff list said voicemail is 15c per minute with asterisks saying visual voicemail is not currently supported. So I wonder does that absence in the new list mean we are finally getting Visual Voicemail here in Ireland along with the 3G iPhone?
I was talking to an O2 rep and she said it was an infrastructure problem that stopped them introducing it straight away... Here's hoping! *crosses fingers*
SCOTT'S REPLY: I haven't heard, but it's something I can at least inquire about for you, Pat. In fact, I just sent something to my rep over at O2 in Ireland. I'll keep you posted.
