Today's iPhone weather: Cloudy and cool

Thursday, April 24, 2008 -- 11:49 a.m. -- on my couch

Rain_bearing_cloudsThere's a brand new set of headphones that look really, really sweet and from what I can gather, they would be an awesome addition to the ol' iPhone collection.

But I can't buy them.

It's not the cost that's swaying me, although that's a concern. It's the 3G cloud, and it's hanging over my head like a storm on a summer's day.

I can't buy those headphones because I have no way of being 100 percent sure that the plug will fit into the next iPhone. One would readily assume that there would be an adapter in that case, but I'm one of those people that would rather wait than having to risk using an adapter.

And this problem isn't just with these headphones, of course.

I can't see myself purchasing an iPod speaker or any special kind of dock. The pin connector at the bottom could change drastically between now and the 3G iPhone launch. It's happened with iPods time and time again -- so many times that there are all kinds of inserts that come with products now to accommodate Apple's ever-changing design.

And while the best companies would work backwards to make sure their products become compatible, I don't feel comfortable taking that chance. That's just me. You might be willing to grab a pair of headphones and get a little adapter. And that's fine -- didn't want to blast that idea.

But right now the forecast calls for clouds to continue to increase. And it will remain cool -- very cool as the next generation iPhone could be blowing in from the west at any time.

What do you think? Are you braving the elements and taking your chances? Or are you carrying a big umbrella like me?

Stay dry. Thanks for calling.

Why the objection to an adaptor? I need one for my Sennheiser PX 100 phones, and find it unobtrusive. Btw, the PX 100's are fantastic... especially for $60!
Also:
Why would Apple change the headphones hole to accomodate 3G? Especially when products like the B&O phones are being added to the Apple Store every day?

SCOTT'S REPLY: Oh, no real objection to it ... I mean, I'd do it ... it's just that I'd rather wait to avoid having to buy another piece. Maybe that part was a little too much on my part.

Yeah, I would wait even though I personally think the connection would stay the same. I recently bought a car charger for my iPhone, never opened it and considered returning it for the same reason. The consensus at the Apple store was the fitting was probably going to stay the same. So I kept it, but, then again it was only $20., so not a huge loss either way. Besides, I may not upgrade right away.

This is the one thing I hate about getting new phones-you ALWAYS have to get new accessories, even if the manufacturer is the same. Big rip off if you ask me.

So now it's all about the wait......

SCOTT'S REPLY: And I agree, Eleanor, it likely would be the same. And the same argument applies that I use when talking about a new phone ... do you wait and hold off and lose out because of it or do you just buy and adapt later. (get it? Adapt later?? -- ehhhhh). Seriously, I'm already thinking about getting the headphones. Did you take a look at those??

Scott,

I am waiting!! Tick tick tick.
My other half is waiting for me to pass on the phone. I am waiting for the new 3G.
Hurry up!! I am trying not to watch the pot not boil but....

Neil

SCOTT'S REPLY: It's coming ... I can feel it in the air.

Oh Com'on bring it out already, i can't wait any longer now

SCOTT'S REPLY: I thought the wait for the first iPhone was exciting, Ash ... and now there's this!!

I agree. Case in point, I bought 2 Apple Universal docks and Apple composite cables for my iPod 5G Video to hook up to TVs through my home entertainment center shortly before the current generation of iPods was released. Now, if I purchase an iPhone, or new iPod (Touch, Nano, Classic) I must buy new docks since my existing ones will not support video out, and new cables which will cost more than $150.00 . In addition, the way Apple bundles its products, I will also be forced to pay for 2 more Apple remotes that I do not need. And to further add insult to injury, my 5G video ipod is incompatible with iTunes video rentals. Furthermore, I have a RF remote, and a bluetooth transmitter/headset that I bought for my iPod 5 Video, that will not work with the iPhone or current generation of iPods. Although the Dock Connector pin out physical configuration is the same, my old (14 months) accessories will not work. Don't forget that Apple rendered many 4G iPod accessories obsolete when they introduced the 5G iPod that no longer used the accessory port located on top of the iPod.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Yeah, you just never know. The headphones looking back might have been a bad example because they can't be that different, but too much can change between revisions.

Those headphones look really sweet.......I bet they would fit the next phone. That being said, for the price, I would still wait. Why shouldn't they just fit w/o an adapter???? If I was considering an iPhone at this point I would certainly consider whether or not waiting for 3G was worth it. This is not the same question.

I have an adapter for my Bose........works fine, but I'm always looking for it....

SCOTT'S REPLY: And you closed with my exact concern ... the adaptor is just another piece that can be lost. I hate having to wonder if I'll need a new piece to make it work.
