Nike+ coming to iPhone and iPod touch

Friday, April 11, 2008 -- 11:05 a.m. -- on my couch

Apple2Nike+, already widely popular on the iPod nano, is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch, stuff.tv's Mark Wilson confirms after speaking with a Nike+ spokesperson at Nike HQ.

Doesn't get much more official than that.

Shouldn't be a giant surprise after patent fillings made the rounds last month that show a sophisticated and upgraded Nike+ model.

Mark says, and rightfully so, that the advantage Apple and Nike have on these devices is Wi-Fi now and likely 3G soon which would mean that serious exercisers could upload information on the fly without having to wait to log into a computer at home.

Here's some linkage for Mark.

Let me tell you about my love-hate relationship with the Nike+ to give you a real world example.

I bought it a week after it came out because (1) it's from Apple and (2) I really, really needed new sneakers. The ones I was wearing were about 5 years old.

I bought the little dongle piece for the shoe and used the whole thing -- twice.

Twice. Why? Because after a while, I got tired of lugging my nano around -- all few ounces of it.

Lame. I know. Back then I wasn't walking as much and I really didn't have a need to carry my nano around.

Things are totally different now. I've been walking A LOT. I've lost some weight since the start of the new year and I feel good. And I am so happy about the whole one device does all deal that I can certainly see me monitoring my daily walks on my iPhone and tracking my progress.

And ... because of the screen size, well, there could be some eventual video integration, depending on Nike's plans and Apple's video capabilities in the next iPhone.

Should be interesting to see this story develop and the product line grow.

Do you use the Nike+? What is your take on this story?

Thanks for calling.

Hey Scott,

I've been using Nike+ for about six months now and love it. I've been lusting over an iPhone ever since they came out. When Nike+ comes to the iPhone I don't think I'll be able to hold out any longer. I'll be first in line at the AT&T store the next morning.

Congrats on your weight loss, by the way. I've lost almost 50 pounds this last year, and I know it ain't easy. Keep up the good work!

SCOTT'S REPLY: Well, thank you, Jeremy. Hopefully my face in the eventually redesigned iPTIB banner will be thinner. Congrats on yours! 50 pounds? That's fantastic.

Nike + is just a cool way to get people motivated and that's where it shines the most.
