Caller Greg alerted me to this great article about the future of the iPhone and why the current shortage has nothing to do with the 3G introduction.
Highly recommended here.
Thanks for calling.

And especially read the 1st comment following the piece. The commenter basically "calls out" the analysts for thinking USA-centric and missing the big picture.
SCOTT'S REPLY: It is true that the iPhone's biggest fortunes may actually be outside of the U.S.
Posted by: Greg | Apr 2, 2008 3:39:42 PMJust heard Gene Munster on CNBC say they expect to see some quantity of 3G iphone by the end of this month or early next month.....!?
SCOTT'S REPLY: He's really pushing it to the forefront and saying it's happening now. I just don't know where he is getting that information. I can't understand why Apple would release it immediately. He is going off the assumption that the shortages at stores are linked to an imminent release of a 3G iPhone model. Whether or not that's true depends on the analyst du jour.
Posted by: Brad | Apr 2, 2008 4:28:16 PMSeems too soon to me also but listened to the entire interview and he did say this followed past patterns of Apple letting inventories run down right before the release of a new version of a product. Supposed to be one of the well respected analysts out there on this subject, if there is such a thing. Only reason I might lend it a hair more credence than otherwise. Certainly doesn't make it definitive by any means.
SCOTT'S REPLY: Oh, no doubt. I definitely recognize Gene Munster as one of the better analysts in the pool.
