Well, we can officially remove the word rumor from all posts about the Canadian version of the iPhone.
Ted Rogers himself, the president and CEO of Rogers Communications, issued a short statement about the iPhone in Canada:
"We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."
He doesn't say much, but he doesn't have to. Just getting word from the company should result in millions of Canadians rejoicing.
I'll be keeping tabs on when details do emerge and will bring them to you the minute I know something for sure.
Thanks for calling.

Lets hope our Canadian friends don't get screwed by Rogers on the iPhone price and plan.
SCOTT'S REPLY: I do hope that they rethink the way these types of plans exist now in Canada and approach it as a whole new era.
Posted by: MacSheikh | Apr 29, 2008 12:11:43 PMHopefully they won't be requiring the equivalent of your firstborn on their plans, but I sure wouldn't be surprised......
SCOTT'S REPLY: Hopefully, not. Hopefully they've seen what works and what doesn't and they make the right choices.
Posted by: Eleanor | Apr 29, 2008 1:11:50 PMI agree with you guys! lol, but lets be serious here... Rogers? We don't stand a chance!
SCOTT'S REPLY: But what if Rogers really has its act together and come up with something pretty fair? I think, personally, that you are looking at a data/voice plan in the neighborhood of $80 a month for unlimited data, basic minutes and texting. That's totally just my hunch/estimate and nothing official, of course.
Posted by: Matt | Apr 29, 2008 2:44:14 PMFinally! I am so excited. Although I have one already and it's on Fido, I will be switching to Rogers once it's available since I doubt they will release it on Fido too. Hopefully it's 3G and we get unlimited data. I also hope there is an iPhone plan which includes voice mins too. Hopefully we get this for less than $100 a month.
SCOTT'S REPLY: I hope that you get all of this, Tyler, but I caution you not to expect too much too soon. Just a way to prevent disappointment, knowing that other countries don't have unlimited data, etc.
Posted by: Tyler | Apr 30, 2008 3:57:12 AMHere's to hoping that include not only data and text messages, but those insane additional fees like the 'system access fee' and the '911 fee'.
SCOTT'S REPLY: Those fees are all set locally by local and state governments. Those fees will never be included, I'm afraid. And I know ... they certainly do add up.
Posted by: Ryan | Apr 30, 2008 10:32:55 AMThat's the common misconception Scott - aside from taxes, there are NO extra government fees on cellular phones in Canada. Unfortunately, they've got you to buy in to the hype! The $8.95 per month 'system access fee' is just a cash grab. Check it out: http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/services/cellphones/accessfee.html
SCOTT'S REPLY: I learn something new about the Canadian cellular landscape every day! Thanks, Ryan.
