SDK: A nice little surprise

Thursday, March 6, 2008 -- 8:40 p.m. -- at my desk

Index_promofooter_sdkHere's a nice little surprise that's coming in iPhone software 2.0 -- and I know several of you have asked about these very things:

From Apple's press release:
"In addition to these new iPhone network and security features, the beta iPhone 2.0 software provides several new Mail features such as the ability to view PowerPoint attachments, in addition to Word and Excel, as well as the ability to mass delete and move email messages."

Looks like in all the excitement this morning that this was passed over.

So there you go!

Thanks for calling.

i seem to have received ALL of your twitter posts this afternoon in an incredibly timely manner...i was on the road all day and the updates were GREAT! i am certainly thrilled with the outcome of your posts today, though less than thrilled with the hype but no meat from apple... the need for instant gratification has me considering jailbreaking my 1.1.4 this weekend!

SCOTT'S REPLY: So glad you got everything, Rick. But don't jailbreak. Now's not the time. Instant gratification is nice, but it's nothing compared to what it means come June. I wanted stuff too, but I'm trying hard to focus on the big picture. That's my first post once I"m off deadline for the paper, so stay tuned. And I believe there's a chance that certain things could be released early as a little thanks for hanging in there.

quick question as i watch the sdk presentation..is the push email feature only available for people on a business server?

SCOTT'S REPLY: It appears from what Steve said to be just for Microsoft exchange. I haven't done enough research yet to see if that could be utilized in some other way.

I think to be fully competitive with Blackberry, they'll need to add the ability to create and edit attachments as well as Bcc messages, be able to search by term etc. I still have a PC although it's getting old and will get an iMac as soon as it goes but for now have Office 2007 which is out of the box compatible with the iPhone according to the AT&T article you linked us to. Hoping that I will get push mail and the rest without being an Exchange business customer. Don't really know how that works. Got it on my Blackberry Pearl before I got the iPhone and hoping I still will with the same setup. Great if you could eventually find out how that works. Thanks! Great news on mass delete by the way. Just sent a comment to you earlier about that!

SCOTT"S REPLY: Thank you, kindly, Brad. Well, Apple did say that new features were coming to Mail -- see post -- and perhaps this is only the beginning. Perhaps the features that you talk about are close to reality as well.

One other thing I just thought of; you'll have to be able to copy and paste out of e-mail messages also because people I know frequently do this with their Blackberries etc. Maybe that will create a little added sense of urgency to bring this functionality out sooner than later! Or maybe that's just wishful thinking....but it does make some sense I think.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I can't believe that in the press portion this morning, someone didn't have the nerve to just ask Steve where cut and paste is. If I was there, I would have done it.

Hallelujah! Typical Apple, to just "slip in" a major feature like this and not say a word about it that people have been clamoring for forever. Neat way to shut us up, LOL. Keep digging, maybe MMS is in there someplace too.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I looked. I looked and didn't find it.

what woul make a major change would be the ability to edit an attacment.
this would mean the ability to edit a .doc
that' would make it the pro tool that we dream of!

SCOTT'S REPLY: That would be an awesome start!
