Your iPTIB fix: Twitter and SMS

Friday, February 29, 2008 -- 1:19 p.m. -- on my couch

PostitI got a question from a caller about Twitter vs. SMS, and it got me to thinking that I should probably should clarify a few things that I hope will be helpful.

You might remember my original Twitter post called My Twitter Philosophy, where I explained when I would use Twitter and when I wouldn't. In a nutshell, I never want Twitter -- or SMS for that matter -- to be a substitute for the blog -- they should all work together in tandem and do different jobs.

Twitter is for breaking news and big posts that I think you should read right away. Because you all embraced Twitter so quickly, I coined it the Twitter Army and am now proud to report that we have 120 recruits. I'm looking to increase that greatly.

SMS is a daily capsule/summary of what folks -- yours truly included -- are talking about at the blog.

My hope is that you'll go for both methods ... Twitter to be alerted instantly when the 3G iPhone comes out and SMS to catch up on some lively comments from the Twitter community -- which, by the way, now extends to more than 40 countries.

Several of you have already signed up for the daily SMS alert, and I thank you very much for that.

Remember, there's no charge for either of these services beyond the normal text message that comes out of your allowance. And, there's a certain peace of mind in knowing that you can rest assured you'll get breaking news when it breaks and reliable updates every day.

I'm really dedicated to building both the Twitter Army and the SMS alerts. The more people, the merrier ... simply because it means that I know you are all getting the news you want and need fast.

Let me know if you have questions. I'm always here.

Thanks for calling.

Signed up for twitter and this morning for SMS. I did not receive an SMS today. Possibly because I was restoring to 1.1.4 based on the anticipation of 'more bars in more places'. I am a virgin again for the third time without 'jailbreak'. alas, no more bars in my office than before! and no voicenotes now :(

SCOTT'S REPLY: Nope ... you didn't get the SMS because it doesn't start til Monday :-D

I saw you on Twitter. So glad. Think of how excited the SDK is going to make you now!

SMS will be the more useful way of getting information out. I installed Twitterific Tuesday, and I would bet that the Twitter service has been down all but a couple of hours since that time. All I get are 404 errors that say something is wrong with the Twitter servers. I have heard tales that Twitter is very unreliable and from this brief experience I would say those tales are true.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I do notice that it goes down a little more often that I would like. With the SMS, Glenn, when I send a text, I can't send a bunch in succession like I can with Twitter so that's limited. But if I send 1 text instructing people to go to the blog, that's good unless I'm on the road and away from a place where i can type really fast. So for now I like them both for that reason -- and i have to hope that Twitter's update to its database on Monday helps the problems.

Does anyone know other site then oogaboogie for sending SMS in UK? Ya, This is the appropriate website for which you are looking for.
Now you can send free sms to U.K from this web site. I am using this web site and keeping my friends in touch. Do you ever tried it?

SCOTT'S REPLY: I just felt like responding to some spam this morning.

Jewell, I took the liberty of removing your advertised Web site and replaced it with "oogaboogie." I know! It just came to me!

And to answer your question, "do you ever tried it?" My reply is "could you stopped me?"
