Earlier, caller Myron posted a comment that cleared everything up about why the iPhone is maxed out at 16GB and the iPod Touch at 32GB.
He writes:
"There is a technical reason for the iPod Touch to have double the capacity of the iPhone. The iPod Touch has 2 flash chips in it (NAND 48-pin TSOP). The iPhone only has 1 flash chip in it. That's all that can fit. Look at the teardown photos of the devices. There's no room for any more chips. The highest capacity flash chip currently available is a 16GB chip from Samsung. The new Samsung chip was just released in January. Hence the capacity bump. Before this, the densest chip was 8GB."
And there you have it ... the real reason.
But if the highest capacity flash chip currently available is 16GB, well, you know that will increase in no time at all. And the chips will get smaller. And the iPhone will get smaller. And the apps will get bigger and better.
See, I'm already getting excited.
Thanks for calling ... and thanks again to Myron for taking the time to clear everything up.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Thanks, Myron. Interesting stuff for those of you who like looking at the innards of gadgets and for the rest of us who wonder how the decisions at Apple get made.
