Subway maps -- lots of them -- on your iPhone

Monday, February 11, 2008 -- 2:44 p.m. -- at my desk

CtaMany of you have asked me to link to a site that showcases subway maps in major cities around the world. I just got wind of one thanks to iphoneworld.ca that does just that.

Check out this link and you'll see subway maps optimized for your iPhone for 30 cities -- including Chicago (pictured). And it works pretty well on Wi-Fi and on EDGE. And according to the Web site, bus maps and more cities are coming soon. And it's pretty good already.

Now be forewarned ... I can remember another site trying to link to subway maps only to be forced to remove them. I'm pretty sure it was the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority that asked that the information be taken down.

But this site has it all. So check it out.

One thing to note ... if you are in an actual subway and there's no EDGE or Wi-Fi -- which is normal -- you may want to either load your city into your iPhone before heading underground or save the images into a folder in iPhoto and sync it over as a folder of maps in your photo app. That way, it's independent of Internet access.

Thanks for calling.

You should check out http://www.itransit.net for nice NYC subway maps.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I just did. It's a nice site. Anyone who rides the rails in NYC should look.
