Big blog announcement: New daily text alerts

Thursday, February 28, 2008 -- 10:37 p.m. -- at my desk

Numbers1I am pleased to announce a brand new service that's starting Monday that I'm totally excited about -- and I think you'll be excited about it too.

iPTIB will be offering daily SMS alerts at a set time each weekday -- 2 p.m. Central Time Monday through Friday -- that features a quick digest of the best of the blog.

And when there's breaking news, I'll send out a text alert as well, although I think Twitter does a great job for the breaking news.

The purpose of the SMS alert is simple ... to tell you what's happening at the blog. Perhaps you are working and you can't check during the day. Now you'll get your quick fix when you can'go to the blog -- complete with a link to go there when you have time -- straight from your iPhone!

Here's how to sign up.

1. Text iPhone to 25808.
2. You'll receive a message back with further instructions so you can opt in.
3. You'll then receive a final message letting you know your subscription was successful.

There's no charge to you other than the regular text message fee that's part of your AT&T account. And you can opt out at any time if you choose, although I have no idea why you'd ever want to :-D

I really hope you'll sign up and become part of this exciting new feature here at iPTIB -- between SMS alerts and the Twitter Army, you'll always have iPTIB wherever you go.

And if you have questions, just let me know in the comments, e-mail or IM. And do let me know if you like the idea and whether or not you'll be taking advantage. I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for calling.

Wow, cool! I'm working with a school organization that wants to do this same thing. What service do you use?

SCOTT'S REPLY: You know I"d have to let you know ... I don't administer this stuff -- I go through a Web department that sets it up but I'll see what I can find out. The paper overall uses these types of services and they are wildly popular. I think that with the power of the blog and the wonderful community of people that we can really get a lot of people to sign up and enjoy the benefits.

SCOTT'S REPLY: It's a pleasure to have you aboard, Paul. Thank you for your continued support!

I will gladly sign up for this new service. I really enjoy your site, it's interesting and offers news tempered with some good old fashioned common sense that breaks through the hype.
I use Twitterific on my Mac, and it's great when it works, but the past few days Twitter itself has had bigtime problems. Trying to follow you and others didn't work yesterday and this morning the entire service is down for some reason. I hope they get it fixed soon.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Thank you, Glenn, and thank you for those nice words. I appreciate that so much. I also use Twitterific and have noticed problems that they tell me are on Twitter's end. So apparently a good time to start SMS!!

I am there, with you 100% of the way LOL

SCOTT'S REPLY: Tom, I appreciate that so very much. Thank you.

SCOTT'S REPLY: I'm so happy to hear that, Nick. Thank you.

MY text message says Tribune Mobile: Sorry your response is unrecognized. Please reply back with a valid keyword to opt-in to Tribune mobile alerts.

SCOTT'S REPLY: Hmmmm. Sorry about that. What state are you in? Your phone isn't unlocked, is it? I think the reply back is iphone y

I haven't heard of any other problems but I'll check it out of course.

Will this work for us UK dwellers?

SCOTT'S REPLY: Currently, I have a call into my web department to find out if this is just U.S. only or not. As soon as I hear back, I will happily let you know.

what is you want to opt out. How do you do it, Thanks

SCOTT'S REPLY: Hi, jd ... sorry I didn't get this until after I sent out the text. You text iphone stop to 25808 to opt out.
