Maybe 3G isn't that fast after all
Monday, December 10, 2007 -- 9:38 p.m. -- at my desk
The site is in German, but it's easy to understand what's going on.
Looks like we've got a little test on our hands -- between the iPhone (EDGE) and the Nokia E61i (3G UMTS)
And the results are a little surprising. The iPhone held its own.
Apple's been bashed -- even on this site -- for not using 3G and going for the less power hungry EDGE and WiFi, but if these numbers are true, there's nothing all that great about 3G.
A definite reason for the iPhone's speedy finish is a faster processor and the Webkit based mobile Safari.
In the test, ebay.com loaded fully in 26 seconds on the Nokia and 30 seconds on the iPhone. The Die Zeit site loaded in 79 seconds on the Nokia, 76 on the iPhone.
So while we complain about EDGE, 3G doesn't really do much for me from what I see here. Doesn't mean I don't want to see a 3G iPhone, but it's interesting to think about.
Thanks for calling.

I spoke to an exec at a company that does wireless phones. He said that the handshake times are similar (for those of you who remember old modems, the handshake was the very beginning of the connection when the user was authenticated, etc.). Depending on how they ran the test, the results not surprising if that's true.
Of course, I have no way to confirm, I'm just going off of what was told to me by this exec.
SCOTT'S REPLY: And of course, 3G or whatever it is in the future only stands to get faster.

3G UMTS is not that fast for data access. On paper EDGE (which I believe is technically 2.75G, GPRS should be 2.5G) is pretty close to it, and from my testing even closer in real life. It is EVDO on the TDMA side and HSDPA/HSPA on the GSM side that actually provide fast packet access.
SCOTT'S REPLY: Noted. And interesting.
