The Diamond iPhone

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 -- 9:13 p.m. -- at my desk

Diamond

Diamonds are an iPhone lover's best friend.

What you are seeing in the picture is real -- that's a diamond iPhone.

iStunning or iNsane? Probably a little of both.

British company Amosu, which has a thing for blinging up gadgets with diamonds and gold, took 420 diamonds totaling 5.65 carats and set them into an iPhone. You have a choice of white or yellow gold (18 karat) and you can add white, black or pink sapphires -- if the diamonds aren't enough.

The total price of the phone is $41,225, although that's without the extra sapphires.

So, who would do this? Well, someone who has a lot of money and doesn't know what to do with it immediately comes to mind. Perhaps, you want to propose to your gadget lover with something other than a traditional diamond ring.

Me, I'm scared carrying around my $399 iPhone. I can't imagine putting something worth $41,225 in my pocket, although mine would be more expensive because I'd go all out and do the black sapphires. But that's just me.

What do you think? Would you buy this? If I helped someone out there finish off their Christmas list, I'm happy to do it. Just send me a diamond. Or two.

Thanks for calling.

I wonder how much it cost to harvest the diamonds when it' a time for a new iphone? Battery change?

SCOTT'S REPLY: Excellent point, Kevin!! Though, if you can afford this iPhone, you can afford whatever that cost is. And with all those diamonds, geez, the diamonds themselves should be able to power the darn thing.
