Attention All Svengoolie Geeks!
Posted at 4:00 p.m. -Monday, January 5
As I had stated in a previous post, after meeting Rich Koz on the set of the Svengoolie show, I was inspired to come up the with idea I propose in this video:
If you are interested in participating in what is now being called The Coffin Building Project, drop me a line!
It's my hope that we can have a new casket to present to Rich in 2009 as his 30th anniversary gift, celebrating 30 years as Svengoolie!

The Face of the New Doctor Who
Posted at 5:20 p.m. -Saturday, January 3
BEHOLD! The face of the NEW DOCTOR! (Or at least he will be in 2010.)
From the Telegraph UK: 'Matt Smith, the 26 year old star of the BBC comedy drama Party
Animals, has been named as the new Doctor Who due to take over from
David Tennant in 2010'
Doctor Who has gone through a tremendous revival since the show was resurrected a few years ago. I myself, being a fan of the Tom Baker era, was won over by David Tennant's portrayal of the Time Lord and have returned to the cynicism that engulfs fanboys when faced with change in their poly-bagged and boarded, static universes.
But hey, I'm sure I'll get over it soon enough. The showrunners for Doctor Who have shown a fine instinct for taking the character in new directions when the times required them, so I'll trust them with this move as well.
What do other fans of the good Doctor have to say?

Svengoolie the Artist?
Posted at 1:40 p.m. - Thursday, January 1
My recent feature on the Svengoolie show makes mention of the scripts that Rich Koz hand-writes for each episode, and was to include some images of the script itself, but couldn't due to space considerations. But now, via the wonder that is the internet, here's a look at a Svengoolie show script:
The cover to episode #680 (the episode I got to see them taping) courtesy of Rich Koz. The Sven image is drawn by Koz himself, an image he's drawn over 680 times!
And here's a page from the script. As stated in the feature, Koz eschews a word processing program and writes each one by hand.
Visit the WCIU website for lots of great behind-the-scenes webisodes, including one that features my visit to the Svengoolie set!

Happy Life Day!
Posted at 1:45 p.m. - Friday, December 26
For those who enjoyed my previous post on the Star Wars Holiday Special, I have another treat...the musical number where Carrie Fisher sings the 'Life Day' song to the John Williams SW theme. Even when I was young I thought this was cheesy to no end...
When the clip opens to the sound of wookies 'talking' over the SW theme...too surreal.
I'd like to hear about you geeky holiday memories! Comment below or upload your geek/nerd themed photo to the Mr. Geek gallery.

For Those Who Celebrate Life Day
Posted at 3:25 p.m. - Wednesday, December 24
Here's my last holiday treat of the week before I get all caught up in family activities and whatnot: Vanity Fair has a great retrospective on the STAR WARS Holiday Special that ran on television back in the 70's. For those who are old enough to remember, the SWHS was a campy variety show that 'featured' the cast of A New Hope as well as some additional characters, namely Chewbacca's wookie family. And yes, Carrie Fisher even SINGS at the end!
The show has never been aired again, mostly due to the fact that Lucas hated it, but can be found on bootleg video at most comic conventions. Enterprising individuals with a fair bit of Google-Fu can also find it available for download on the internets. Trust me, unless you are the most die-hard of SW geeks, you do not want to be paying money for this thing.
Check out the article, and you'll get a sense of what a comedy of errors the whole show was.

Catch me on Svengoolie tomorrow!
Posted at 4:05 p.m. - Friday, November 21
Or at least part of me...
At the end of tomorrow's presentation of BERSERK! starring Joan Crawford, your truly appears as the 'hand at the door' that Sven talks to for his last gag.
Did it in one take, baby! Now that's something not even Robert DeNiro can claim!
So watch WCIU - TV, Channel 26 on Saturday @ 9:00 pm!
Be sure to check it out and also be on the lookout for my feature on the Svengoolie show in the REDEYE in the weeks ahead!

Svengoolie...Sven-geekie?
Posted at 9:45 p.m. - Wednesday, November 19
A couple weeks ago, I spent an afternoon on the set of WCIU's Svengoolie show to research a feature for the REDYE. I interviewed Rich Koz aka 'Sven' took some video and even administered the GNAT to Koz.
While the feature won't see print for another week or two, the folks over at WCIU have posted a video documenting my visit.

After seeing Tina Fey accept her Emmy awards last night, I was compelled to write the following haiku:

Moist and Chewy? How about FUNNY?!
Posted at 11:30 a.m. - Friday, September 5
A computer nerd and a stand-up comedian walk into a shoe store...
I can almost guarantee that you can come up with a better punchline to that joke than the folks at Microsoft did...and it wouldn't cost you millions to do so.
I am talking, of course, about the new television spot starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates to promote Windows Vista...
And oy vey...it was bad. It was really, REALLLY BAD...
