Watching the Watchmen - can you spot the differences?

Posted at 12:40 p.m. - Thursday, January 1

Happy New Year everyone!  As we look forward into 2009, one of the most anticipated films of the year has to be Zack Snyder's adaptation of the classic DC 'maxi-series' WATCHMEN.  With all the legal wrangling between movie studios aside, this film looks to be a geek's dream come true:

Now, courtesy of the good folks over at Comic Book Resources, we have this nifty new video package from Snyder, featuring some new, never-before-seen footage from the film. I just finished re-reading the epic a couple weeks ago, and there are some scenes in this sequence that aren't in the book, so it appears as if Snyder's taking a few artistic liberties with the story. And if what I'm hearing about the ending being 'adjusted' is true, some Watchmen purists may not be getting the flick that they want. But so far, this looks like its shaping up to be something special.

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...

Posted at 10:15 a.m. - Monday, December 29

Christmas has passed and I'm still alive, despite catching one wicked flu bug that had me bed-ridden and fuzzy headed for most of the holiday.  I'm on the comeback trail right now, and while not a hundred percent just yet, I'm up and about and on the lookout for New Year's happenings and whatnot.

In the meantime, I'd encourage you to check out my guest appearance on the Around Comics podcast with Chris Neseman and Tom Stillwell of Spinner Rack Comics.

We have a nice discussion about comics and what it's like to write for a licensed property like Xena: Warrior Princess and Army of Darkness.

Please check it out and feel free to comment below!

HULK SMASH MARVEL HEROES!!!

Posted at 8:15 a.m. - Wednesday, December 24

The animation wing of Marvel Entertainment has been cranking out a bunch of really cool direct-to-DVD features as of late (i.e. IRON MAN, DOCTOR STRANGE & ULTIMATE AVENGERS) and has a few more in waiting for release in January. They've just put some footage from their new 'HULK VERSUS' DVD on Marvel.Com:

The bit where Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, flies back into his hand is just awesome! They've really been able to capture the essence of the character in motion, if you ask me.

But...

Will the movie be as good as the trailer?  I dunno...

You comments and feedback are always welcome!

Comics You Should Read

Posted at 9:30 a.m. - Monday, December 22

While at Challengers Comics and Conversation on the Geek To Me Comic Shop Tour (see previous entry), I spoke with a couple fangirls who frequent the shop to get their fave books to recommend. What they picked really came as no surprise, but they were still good picks. Be on the lookout for Chris Neseman of Around Comics to horn in on the conversation (he invited me to participate in one of his podcasts coming up) and for me to flub the origin of Frank Quietley's 'psuedo-name.' (It's actually a play on 'quite frankly' so I hear, not 'frankly quiet' or whatever dumb thing I said. The hotness of the fangirls had me all flustered.) As always, I look forward to your comments and if you have a shop you'd like for me to check out, drop me a line!

Getting into The Spirit

Posted at 12:00 a.m. - Saturday, December 20

Oh sweet...this weekend's edition of the REDEYE has a COVER STORY written by your truly.  The story is a primer on Will Eisner's Spirit character and the upcoming film based on the comic.

Spirit

Now I've gotta admit that I haven't seen the film yet and I'm getting a bit worried as the advance word of mouth on the flick hasn't been all that positive.  Rumor has it that Frank Miller's inexperience as a director really shows, and that he's jettisoned much of the Eisner 'essence' for Sin City-type antics.

I just hope that the rumors of Bugs Bunny-ish, physics defying combat taking place between Denny Colt and the Octopus aren't true.

I guess we'll se soon enough.

Wolverine: Origins
Posted at 8:15 p.m. - Monday, December 15
Now that the folks at Marvel Films are making the Wolverine: Origins trailer available, I've got it here on the Geek To Me blog. (Yes, I know it's actually called X-Men: Origins - Wolverine, but it looks like they've pulled from the original comic book mini for some of Logan's background.) So what's to like? Sabretooth, Gambit and some shady goings at the Weapon X Project. Some kick @$$ fight scenes. And yeah...Hugh Jackman in the role he's defined. What's not to like? This feeling that the trailer is showing us the best the film has to offer, leaving it with little else. Will this film help fanboys and fangirls forget the suckfest that was X3: Last Stand? Only time will tell.
