The RedEye Superhero Tourney - The Elite Eight

Posted at 2:20 p.m. - Wednesday, July 16

My batting average in this contest is dropping, but hey, the RedEye folks still wanna know what I think, so here are my predictions for the Elite Eight:

  • Superman vs. Wonder Woman - A classic match-up for the ages!  Comic book geeks debate this one all the time and there was even a DC Treasury Edition called Superman vs Wonder Woman decades ago that tried to answer the question: who would win in a fight?  The book stayed on the fence, but now YOU CAN DECIDE!  Both heroes have been top vote getters throughout the tourney, so this is a tough call. Who do I go with? How do I decide?  Two words: Heat Vision.

My Prediction: Superman keeps his spot as Top Gun in the DCU.
  • Silver Surfer vs. Buffy - Let's be honest, if this were a straight up fight, Buffy wouldn't stand a chance.  But we're not talking about pure brawling here, we're also talking about who's the better character; who do we root for the most; who inspires us; who is the most compelling; who is the character who we relate to the best?

The Surfer is a formidable character, probably the most formidable left in the tourney, but Buffy's fans are devoted, pulling off the upset of the tourney by vanquishing the Batman and have been bringing the 'magic' to this tourney.

Unless the Surfer has some counter-spell...

My Prediction: Buffy turns the Silver Surfer into a beach bum.
  • Spider-Man vs Green Lantern - Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is up against Earth's Cosmic Cop. It's web-slingers against power rings.  Moxie versus fearlessness.  Spidey has battled cosmic powered foes in the past, so it's conceivable he could take GL in a fight, but again, it comes down to CHARACTER.

For all he's been through, Peter Parker is the ultimate underdog.  Hal Jordan is a hot shot fighter pilot who always makes it with the ladies.  Who do YOU relate to best fanboy?  I know who I do.

My Prediction: Spidey slings his way into the Final Four!

  • Wolverine vs. Kitty Pryde - See, now this is the kind of match-up that I always get wrong.  Sure, you can go with the popular vote and call it for Wolverine, but Kitty Pryde should have lost to the Hulk in the last round.  Are X-Men really that popular?

Kitty was a student of Logan's for some time and they share a bond that few will ever know.  Logan, for all his reputation as a ferocious brawler can also be a very meticulous strategist.  He knows all of Kitty's weaknesses, and vise-versa.

On the character level, both are equally compelling.  Wolverine with his tortured past and Kitty with her trials as one of the youngest X-Men.

Ok...I'm going against the grain here and I bet you folks will vote the opposite just to say I was wrong, but that's ok.  ;-)

My Prediction: Kitty Pryde phases past Logan into the next round.
Have at thee folks!

Superman vs WW? Heat vision is cool but against Wonder Woman it is a bad idea. She can take the beams with her bod but she doesn't have to. Her bracelets would deflect them right back at Supes. Meanwhile, her magic lasso easily contains Superman and her tiara easily cuts him. Edge belongs squarely to the Amazon.

This is bull. I voted plenty of times for batman, but gave up when I noticed that NONE of my votes were counting. Total sham. You can go ahead and crown your stupid winner, but this whole thing was a big sham. I'm done.

Yeah, I think I'm done with this contest. I was a little worried when it had Popeye and Buffy in it. Now that she's won, and beaten Batman in the process, its just not worth my time anymore. She just isnt a SUPERHERO. Simple as that.

Buffy is a not a SUPERHERO. But she is a SUPER HERO, like Luke Skywalker, the Bionic Man/Woman, and Beowulf. She's comes from the horror genre. If,in addition to her special abilities and mission, she had a dual identity, costume, or a secret hideout(or anything that would make her instantly recognizable as Buffy the Vampire Slayer*) she might be a superhero.

*I could be wrong, but I don't think she wears that shirt with her name on it all the time.

All,

For what it's worth, I sold an equal number of copies of the last issue of Buffy as I did Final Crisis #2 at the store I manage.

It outsells any other single-character book month in and month out. Sounds like a super hero to me...

Stop crying over stupid outfits. Her identity is secret to her foes if that's what it takes. But she IS a super hero.

So stop whining and accept she's gonna beat the the crap out of all the other oldies. She is the new generation of superheroes and if she is beaten by any of these characters it is going to be one of the two X-Men left...

the thing most of you fanchildren are forgetting is that this is not vs, it's who is a better superhero

That being said, it is a sham that Cap and Batman are out

Go Buffy!! First of all, Buffy really is a superhero, by definition.. she has superpowers and saves peoples lives.. that's all there is to say about it.. and she definitely is the best female superhero ever.. but it is a shame that she eliminated batman.. I think both of them should be in the final four..
