The RedEye Hero Tourney As I See It - The Sweet Sixteen!

Posted at 2:45 p.m. - Friday, July 11

Four of my predictions in the first round went bust (although Spawn Nation put up a fight and some last minute votes for Daredevil ousted Hellboy) but most everything else went just as I thought.

And while the first round was touch-and-go in a couple match-ups, I think the Sweet Sixteen will be easier to call...

         In the Stan Lee Region:

  • Superman vs Captain America - The Son of Jor-El against the World's Greatest Fighting Machine.  Superman received more votes in the first round than Cap.  On paper, the fight is more evenly matched than you'd imagine, as Cap could conceivably take down Superman using superior tactics (and perhaps some kryptonite he swipes from Batman).  But most fanboys won't see it that way, so the round goes to Ka-El.

My Prediction: Superman pummels Captain America

  • Thing vs Wonder Woman - Ben Grimm goes from a walk in the park against the Shadow to a kick in the pants by Diana.  Wonder Woman faced down the Spawn Nation and didn't blink an eye.  She can beat The Thing with her eyes closed.

My Prediction: Wonder Woman by a landslide

        The Kevin Smith Region:

  • Batman vs Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Sigh.  As much as I'd like to think that the Slayer Army could pull off another upset, well, that just ain't gonna happen.  Batman has already shown that decades of being molded into the ultimate badass gets most fanboys (and fangirls) to take your side in a fight.  So long Buffster, we hardly knew ye.'

My Prediction: Batman puts a stake through Buffy's heart.
  • Silver Surfer vs The Flash - Now here we have an interesting match-up.  Who do you think will come out in greater numbers?  Marvel Zombies or DC Fanatics?  Will Norrin Radd's 'cool factor win out?  Or The Scarlet Speedster sprint to another win?  Or will it be a case of 'I don't like this Flash because it ain't Wally West.' (Y'know, someone actually voted against the Flash in the first round for that very reason?  Not becase they liked Flash Gordon, but disliked Barry Allen. Tsk-tsk.)  Y'know what, I'm going with my heart over my head here and say The Flash will somehow pull this one out.

My Prediction: The Silver Age Flash will outrace the Silver Surfer.

          The Nicholas Cage Region

  • Spider-Man vs The Punisher - Big Pun owes a lot to Spidey, what with his debuting in Spidey's book and all.  And Frank Castle, even though he romped all over The Black Panther, didn't get a whole lot of props from fanboys on the comment board.  So this one's an easy call.  My spider sense tells me Aunt May's favorite Nephew will win this one.

My Prediction: Spidey swings into the Elite Eight.

  • Green Lantern vs Iron Man - Hal Jordan has the Ultimate Weapon in the DC Universe.  Tony Stark has the most advanced armor in the Marvel Universe.  Hal Jordan is a hot-shot pilot without fear.  Tony Stark is a futurist and technological savant who can make deadly weaponry from stuff he finds in a dumpster bin.

Hm.  Kinda close to call.  Oh wait!  Iron Man has a hit movie that is still raking in the dough worldwide.  Green Lantern is getting demoted by the 'Alpha Lanterns' in DC's Final Crisis.  Looks like Tony gets the call.

My Prediction: Iron Man snuffs out Green Lantern

    The Rosario Dawson Region

  • Wolverine versus Daredevil - I'm not even gonna try.  Daredevil got a run for his money from Hellboy, a Dark Horse character, and there ain't no way he's gonna stand up to Wizard Magazine's poster boy for popularity.  Can you say 'snikt'?

My Prediction: Close your eyes Matt Murdock, cuz Wolverine's gonna do what he does best...and it ain't very nice.

  • Hulk versus Kitty Pryde - HULK SMASH PUNY GIRL!  WHAT? HULK CAN'T TOUCH PUNY GIRL!?  PUNY GIRL PASS THROUGH HULK LIKE BEAN BURRITO? HULK ANGRY!  HULK VERY ANGRY!

Then Hulk grateful that fanboys like Hulk over X-men supporting character.  Hulk know fanboys want to see Hulk in Elite Eight versus Wolverine.  Hulk glad!

My Prediction: HULK SMASH FANBOY WHO NO VOTE FOR HULK!  (And there won't be many.)

    And we're off!

Hahaha! Your predictions couldn't be more wrong!
How stupid are you gonna feel when Buffy and Kitty Pryde beat out the likes of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and the Hulk?

Hey Anonymous,

Well, it's too soon to say who's going to win, but actually I'm pretty psyched by how well Buffy has done so far. The Slayer's fans have really turned out in numbers. But I've been watching this tourney since it started and I've learned not to take anything for granted. Hellboy had a nice lead going into the last day of the tourney and lost it in the last hour of voting. So we'll see.

Will I feel stupid if Buffy and Kitty beat the boys? Nah. I'm a fan of theirs too.

Thanks for voting! Tell your friends!

I see the EMO/Punk/Goth people are voting multiple times or using a program to vote for buffy.... notice all the other heroes receive not nearly as many votes. Sorry Tribune you guys fail....These polls are skewed

My prediction is that Wonder Woman is the only DC character standing at the end of this round.

Hey James,

Say what? I think the reason you see so many votes cast in the Batman/Buffy contest is because there's been some campaigning among Buffy fans on different sites like Whedonesque.Com and the Dark Horse Comics MySpace page. That's not stopping Batman fans from doing the same, y'know. (The Dark Knight had a whole lot of votes in the first round, so it shouldn't be a problem for his fans.) Kitty Pryde is doing pretty well against the Hulk right now, too. Sounds more like a grrl power thing, not an EMO/Punk/Goth thing.

So don't hate, participate.

You have to love the way Whedon fans can campaign, but I think the premiere of the Dark Knight is going to foil Buffy this time around.

If this was about Superheroes... then Thor and Silver Surfer maybe Capt America and Superman should be in the final 4. Thor is a god!!!! Surfer is pretty much the only one that can take on Galactus. Buffy would get eaten alive like a school girl at Jeffrey Dahmers birthday party

All the results in this tournament are skewed based on the fact that you can vote as many times as you want. Which makes this tournament not only terribly inaccurate but lame as hell.

Notorious,

Internet polls generally have their share of 'ballot box stuffing' (heck, presidential elections do as well) but it doesn't stop the fans from expressing their devotion to their favorite characters. This tourney was put together for comic-book fans to do just that. We all vote, comment on why we voted the way we did and wait to see who comes out on top. We're not trying to determine the next leader of the free world here, just geek out together and have a little fun. Vote all you want, that's part of the fun! If someone's willing to enter those friggin' code letters each...and..EVERY..TIME (that sure keeps me from voting more than once) then let them. It just shows how devoted they are.

So pretend like it's the 7th day G.O.D. and take a rest. You'll thank me for it later. ;-)

As if people needed another reason to not read the Tribune. They are going to have Buffy win this competition and it will make the tribune even more irrelevant thn ever. Thats what we get with a far left paper. The guys on the right would have Capt America or Superman Winning it.
