    Verizon Service in CTA Subways

    Posted Aug. 29 at 6:12 p.m.

This just in. The CTA has added another cell phone service provider to its subway.  Beginning Monday, Verizon Wireless service will work in the subterranean sections of the CTA.

Can you hear me now?  Good.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that one.

Even if you're not a VZW customer, you can cell-e-brate that the agency will earn close to $28,000 per month for a 10-year contract with Verizon.  This is in addition to the agency's now two-year-old $2.9 million deal with U.S. Cellular.  Cha ching!

Sadly, the down side to these deals is also obvious: the potential for more cell yell.  That's why "Going Public" feels it is important to unload with this obvious advice.  Please. don't. talk. loudly.  Don't understand the urgency?  Read this previous post from a rider decrying cell nation.

It will fall on deaf ears, but what advice do you want to give VZW users as they exercise newfound phone freedom?

Verizon is already working in the tunnels.

So that's why I was delayed while they shut half the subway down the other night. Typical CTA. Delay the night commuter for no real reason.

It's already working. I was already able to trade some oil options on futures Friday to profit from the storm coming during the morning trading session on my Blackberry and then close a few M&A deals in advance of the weekend. It will be great to call ahead to Tilli's or Trotter's to order a pickup meal after a late night at the firm doing pitchbooks.

They must have been testing Thursday afternoon...I thought I was imagining things when I felt my VZW Blackberry vibrate, and was shocked to see that I was picking up 3 bars in the Red Line at Monroe!

Another safe haven from cell phone abuse GONE. You can't hear much of anything in the subway tunnels to begin with, now we get to listen to others conversations as well. I wonder if the CTA will cover the cost of my hearing aid ?

great news.. i hope that eventually all cell phone companies are available.
Yes, some ppl will have poor manners and have loud or innapropriate conversations. If you let ppl with bad manners get to you, you are going to be miserable in a big city.

I just wanted to respond to the women from bronzeville who's comments were printed i think on september 8 or 9, 2008 of the printed red eye. This query for you since you stated that you spend over $100.00+ is that in a month, week, what is it? There is a 30 day pass for $75.00. I know this because i have done it for the 10 years i've been here. Is this an option for you and possibly, why haven't you tried it.
