    Sheltering the Cyclists

    Posted July 14, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.

Another boost for the bicyclists who use the CTA. Today, CDOT announced that covered bike shelters will be built at four stations: Midway airport station on the Orange Line, the Sox-35th Street station on the Red Line and the Jefferson Park and Damen Avenue stations on the Blue Line, according to a Tribune report

"We want to provide a seamless transition from riding a bicycle to taking public transit," CDOT spokesman Brian Steele is quotes as telling the Trib, adding that funding for this project comes from a $916,000 grant from Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality, a federal program aimed at encouraging the public to consider alternatives to car travel.  Suh-weet for cyclists.

The shelters will reportedly look like what's at Millennium Park, pictured below:Bikerack

I know shelter is an issue for bicycle/CTA riders.  I recently received this plea from a Brown Line rider named Daniel who said that he wants the bike racks at Kimball moved back into the station for security reasons.  He wrote: "Now that the bike racks have been moved outside, I've had one bike stolen and another vandalized.  Please, CTA, can you move the bike racks back into the station!"

I will see what the CTA says about this Kimball kerfuffle.

In the meantime: Do we need any more cyclist-related infrastructure along the system?

Does it really cost $258,000 to construct a bike storage area? I don't think so. They should be able to build many more than four storage areas with $916,000. Really, it's not that hard. You basically build a garage and put some bike racks in it. This doesn't cost over $250K to build. Take away the contractor padding and mismanagement and corruption fees, and use the money for more storage which is more secure.
