Dangers of the CTA: Red Line Reality Check

    Posted July 28, 2008 at 5:43 p.m.

Yet another reminder of how careful you need to be along the CTA.  This is not the fault of the agency, but I was horrified by this Red Line electrocution story.  The police are investigating the death of a 43-year-old man on Red Line tracks over the weekend as a possible homicide.

A waitress contacted me about a year ago and told me she was nearly pushed onto the tracks in a subway by a man she didn't even know. I wrote about it in a past column. Have you ever had a dangerous encounter along the CTA?  What happened, and did you report it to the police?

The thing that makes me the most angry about this situation is that at any given time of the day, when I get off of my train to transfer to the red at Roosevelt, there's always three fat, lazy security guards with dogs sitting on the L platform; usually chatting with each other, or on cell phones. Where were they when something like was going on? Probably off for the day.

Clearly they are being paid to do nothing, since instances like these keep occurring.

My question to CTA is this:
Why do I never see any security or even CTA personnel at any other subway stations, especially at night, or other areas that have a need for such thing? Try putting some money into the deteriorating tracks and trains, instead of on lazy people who don't do their job, yet get paid for it. And get rid of the security dogs. They are serving no purpose if they're with fat lazy rental guards, and are only suffering in this weather.

My condolences to the family of the man who was electrocuted at Roosevelt.
