    False alarm, CTA riders

    Posted by Jane Hirt - 1:20 p.m., Dec. 14

    Bookcover

The Sunday/Monday CTA walkout has been called off -- no doubt to the great relief of everybody who has no option but the CTA to get to work and school.

It was a group of religious leaders who reportedly persuaded the unions representing CTA workers to call off the 24-hour job action that was to start Sunday night. Read the full story on why it was called off here.

This standown is a good thing. I suspect a job walkoff would have backfired on CTA workers. Many people already blame the CTA for their own budget woes. These critics either don't understand or don't believe that a long-term budget solution actually lies with state lawmakers.

If the CTA workers would have walked, I suspect that the tide of outrage would have turned on them. Which would have taken the focus off state lawmakers and their budgetary responsibilities. Not a good thing.

it is a shame that cta is so greedy . the service is bad the drivers are cruel they pass you up and talk crazy. and they want more money they should sit down some where it's all about the money to them work on the poor service.

So the CTA unions show they have no spine, and bend to the wishes of a bunch of religious leaders?! What a crock!

So the pastors said low-income people who have no other transportation options and schoolchildren would be unfairly impacted by the loss of CTA service—even for a day.

So what! What do you think is going to happen on January 20th when the CTA plans to eliminate 81 bus routes, raise fares and lay off 2,400 employees? Those so-called low-income people and schoolchildren will be impacted then by service cuts and fare hikes. They're going to suffer either way, so what's the difference!?

If it takes a few low-income people and schoolchildern to suffer for 24 hours for a message to get sent to Springfield, then so be it! If it takes job action for the fools in Springfield to act, then let it be done. Let the few suffer for the benefit of the many.

If Springfield is left unchecked to play their petty little games, everybody is going to suffer come January 20th!

ok. so it took a bunch of religious leaders to tell the CTA what everyone ought to know from common sense?
