Is Ryan Seacrest being booted from "Idol"? Not yet, but in the wake of declining ratings, MSNBC reports that Fox has launched an online market research survey to get input about the once-untouchable show. Some of the questions focus specifically on host Ryan Seacrest and his interaction with the other judges and the contestants.
The story reminded me a lot of some criticisms I had in this post.
Wednesday's ratings, by the way, were down again. "Idol" drew 22.1 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That means, however, that "Idol" has hit a five-year low.
That got Vital Idol thinking. What could "Idol" lose yet still reamin a powerhouse. Why don't you decide.

I still love Idol and can't imagine losing any key members. It is too much like a family. I find that by Tivoing the show I don't ever get to vote which is disheartening. My computer is more of a focus than TV now. Some days I forget to turn the TV on altogether. It just isn't interactive enough for me anymore. Maybe AI needs to make the show more interactive - like add a vote during the show and announce early results while still on air, like they did in the second year.
BRIAN'S REPLY: Interesting idea. Yes, TV's problem now that everyone is getting high-powered computers and high-capacity internet access is that it's a passive experience. Voting during the show could make it more appealing to people who want instant gratification.
